can rockbox read NTFS-formatted harddrives? this is mostly curiosity, but there are a handful of small conveniances NTFS has over FAT32. anyone know?

No.

Rockbox needs to support FAT32 since it can only start off a FAT32 partition (since that is the only way the ROM can load it), and adding support for more filesystems will just take away valueable ram for unnecessary features. You can partition your Archos fine, just make sure the first one is FAT32 and then make the other ones whatever file system you want. Just don't expect Rockbox to understand them.

Then again, this list also includes

2. Record to WAV (uncompressed)
and
3. Crossfade between tracks!

Obviously this list was written with the Archos in mind, who knows what's possible with the iRiver......

i found that part of the FAQ like 20 minutes after i posted the question. sorry 'bout that

it says the player needs the FAT32 to start loading firmware, so probably it really means it. thanks for the response though

SRGilbert, where did you find that list? The "NoDo" list herespecifies which "NoDo" features are specific to the Archos and which apply to all lines of players. Is that the list that you were referring to or did you find a different one somewhere else on the Rockbox site? (The reason I ask is that I have been working on updating information like that list that is outdated in light of the work that has been done in the last couple of months on the iriver.)
