Radio, is that on the cards?
IS the radio on the way does anyone know, just wondering cos it would compleatly detach me from the lame iriver firmware once and for all once it does come. I like to listen to talk radio while I'm in work, but I have to reload everytime. Would be nice to get radio in seconds.

I'm pretty sure it will be committed for the iriver, but whether it is a question of sooner rather than later I do not know. Apparently work is under way in getting the radio function to work, so you could go on the rockbox irc and ask one of the devs about it.

Yea, I was just thinking about this today, and I was thinking that if there are plans to record FM, then I hope there will be plans to rewind and pause live radio. I have to go into meetings in work and it freeks me out havin to turn off my talkshows to listen to a bunch of old tits talking about the latest day glo munki poo, or whatever the boring irrelevant subject of the day is.

As for ff/rew live radio, I can't see it. That would be similar to a PVR system for TVs, and that would mean -constant- writing/reading/erasing from the disk and buffer adjustment. Your battery would be sucked dry rather quickly. |

The iriver hardware can record off the radio, but it is thought that it was disabled by iriver due to interference caused by the hdd spin up.
The player can record from radio but no promises it will be ususable until someone has tested it.

Well I suppose a rewind function would require constant HD spin, because you would need to constantly write to a stroe file to hold the last say 30 mins of data, but if you hold a few seconds in a buffer, then the pause function can easily work, radio can be put on hold and the time it takes for the HDD to spin up can be held in the buffer. Then it is just a simple matter of recording to a file, as radio record would normally work, but you would also need to be able to play that file and fast/skip forward, so when the radio became live again it would be as seamless as possiable. Now, the way I see it, the solution could be to record to OGG and create short recordlenght files, and dump these from the disk when they are not needed, ie when they are scanned past. So say you pause for 45 mins, you would have 3 15 minute recordings, when you hit 30 mins, the first file is dumpped, allowing a small buffer if you want to go back. The HDD spin problem I could not see as being huge with this solution, and of course, it would be up to the user if they decided to use this feature.

That's what he's doing. He's just wanting to know when Rockbox will have it done so he doesn't have to anymore

FM radio is now implemented. Presets are not available yet though. Needs some button handling changes to work.

Edit: Found a bug - if you're listening to the radio, go out to the file browser, and hit "resume", your last playlist starts, but the radio doesn't stop. You have to actually press "stop" on when you're in the radio screen. A small thing, which I'm sure will be fixed eventually. Last edited by cricket : August 16th, 2005 at 07:16 AM. |
