Anyone like the idea of a backlight fade in/out?

Call me a puddle (wet, shallow, tendency to dry up...) but I always thought the coolest thing about the iPod UI was the way the backlight fades on/off. That doesn't mean I like the iPod (I have an iHP-140 w/ RockBox latest build ) - just that I like the backlight! Now, this may or may not be possible from a hardware point of view in the iHP-1xx but I'd love another tick-box in the "mine can do what yours can do, only better" discussion I often have with Poddies...

Thoughts?

Martin

Yes that would be good. Especially when using the caption function on rockbox.

Not possible I'm afraid. http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...ignments#GPIO1 seems to indicate that it's an on/off deal.

Edit:
Code:
18.02.15 # <Slasheri> I just tested that dimming backlight on iriver is possible with simple pwm pulse
18.02.19 # <Slasheri> very nice effect
Seems like it's very possible.

in a way it's cool, but it's just a gimmik and generates programming overhead that is not really necessary for me.
and it generates more internal switching which doesn't improve sound. just my opinion.

So maybe have it as an option under 'Display'? Those that want purity just go for 'on/off'; those that like the gimmicks (yes please!) select 'fade on/fade off'...

have it fade in with the music, like the music fades in in an H3X0.

Well, it looks like it's here already! Quote from CVS - 'Initial support for iriver backlight dimming. Unfortunately dimming remote control's EL-backlight is not possible.'

Voted no because I've just installed the latest build that has it in and I don't really care for it much and annoyingly it's not currently an option but standard.

Actually, I would vote yes to a fade out, that is cool, but fading in/up just annoys me cos I have to wait to get enough light to see what I'm doing - roll on "configure-ability"!!

Before I installed, I thought... hmmm... definitely a crass Ipod look-alike.
Now that I did install it, screw it... It's bloody cool looking! I don't care!

Voted 'yes', assuming it would be configurable. If so, I think it is always cool to have a choice.

Yes, choice is good as long as it doesn't undermine the Rockbox architecture. There *is* such a thing as destructive feature bloat...

EDIT: just tried it myself - it does look very cool. I would like to see it configurable too however (fade up duration, fade down duration, set both to zero to disable).

Okay, I am now seriously impressed. I OP'ed this on Friday lunchtime (less than 3 days ago). I come back on Monday morning and discover almost 20 posts and 70 votes (mostly in favour). Not only that but the RB guys have gone and implimented the idea! Very, very cool!

I guess maybe this is what's called democratic open-source coding! Whatever it's called, I give the RB guys my awe, my thanks, and (perhaps more usefully), my money - donation made.

Agreed - personally I think the fades are a little slow. Probably need to be able to step through the fade speeds in at least half-second jumps for it to be useful - 0.25s steps might be better. I think 1/10s steps would be slightly too much (all IMHO of course).
