Fear of RockBox

I would really like to put the RockBox on my iRiver, but there are a few problems.
1.) I just got it and it will void the warranty.
2.) I heard it doesn't play music yet.
3.) I'm very unlucky and everything tends to go wrong whenever I do something (this is my 3rd MP3 Player and it hasn't brcked yet so thats good)

Any advice?
Please/Thank You

No point flashing at the moment, Rockbox audio playback is a bit buggy (especially OGG & optical out doesn't work)

They're still releasing new versions of bootloader, so I would wait until those slowdown and audio playback is sorted.

I have Rockbox flashed, but go back to official for music playback.

One of the main reasons I'm using Rockbox is because my warranty expired 3 months ago. It works, but I don't think it's at the stage where it's far superior to the iRiver firmware. Not to mention that it's not as stable either.

Leave it for now if I were you.

Thank You

Thanks guys! Does anybody know when it might be close to having good music playback? I leave America in a month and I'm not sure if I'll have access to a computer while I'm away.

The actual music playback is IMO phenomenal for gapless. I can't really fault the playback, but the menus can be a bit slow. It's somewhat niggly, but I think it's likely to be sorted over the month. I've seen improvement in just these few days on that front.

yeah fair enough Mikey. I was once in your state. But i just eventually took a big gulp and just flashed it (even tho i'm still under warranty but meh). Playback is still buggy of course. There is still a lot of work left. Once again, it's only experimental. All that you are missing out on in terms of audio playback is amazingly coded gapless for both ogg and mp3.

Leaving in a month huh? At the rate the fellas over at Rockbox are going, you'll see a lot of progress before you leave. a month is a lot of time. Trust me. They're doing a phenominal job over there.

Having said all that, i'm actually using rockbox to listening to some of my DJ compilation mixes!

Great! Thank you that's a relief.

Another problem: I decided it wouldn't hurt just to have the rockbox stored on my pc for now, so I downloaded it, but when I went to patch the firmware with the rockbox I got a weird error "Couldn't modify existing file. Check if file is write protected, then try again". I made sure the read only file checkbox in properties wasn't checked, but other than that I don't know what to do, any suggestions? anyone?

Does this mean iRiver is gapless now?

I really hope soon the H3*0 series will be supported by rockbox soon. Finally, I can look elsewhere from the Karma and its rotten hitachi HD and my crappy old CD player for gapless playback of music!

I'd jump on an H120, but stick without any scroll capability makes Thasp carpel tunnel syndrome.

Does it really void the warranty, though? After using HD players that failed, I couldn't buy a HD-based DAP where the warranty is void after getting it to properly play back music.

Yes that means iRiver has gone gapless hehe.

Well depending on the layout of the hardware used inside, it wouldn't be too hard to implement H300 firmware once the H100 firmware is complete. I think the hardware inside is almost similar to one another.

And yes it does void warranty if you had rockbox installed and it got bricked at some stage. If you return it to iRiver and they check the player and they found out that u were using a firmware which wasn't an iRiver firmware, They won't replace or fix it for you.

But they wouldn't ever know if you flashed rockbox and reflashed it back to normal firmware.

The main differences between the h100 and the h300 is the colour LCD and USBOTG

The bit that is taking so long at the moment is the codecs for mp3 / ogg etc, but that will all be reused so should be loads loads quicker. Once the h100 rbx is working well, Linux said he would most likely move onto writing the h300 bootloader

The guys working on Roxbox get a "big hats off" from me. Considering they are not getting paid one dime for all their work and they are going to areas that iRiver has chosen not too (gapless) they deserve our collective thank you.

Yes RB has some issues now but considering that this firmware is 100% organic with zero input from iRiver the RB folks have come a long way in a very short time.

It is a work in progress but one that all H Series owners should keep tuned into.

Again, it works, has some insects in it but has a HUGE upside.

Yes. Thanks to rockbox for listening to, and implementing the suggestions of other company's customers. Another win for open source.

Hi!

Hey guys I just found out that I'm leaving way sooner than expected, friday night, and I was wondering if anyone could post a modified .hex file for rockbox (I've given up on my fear of it). The FWPatcher tool does not work on my computer for some reason . Also for those of you interested I just checked the RockBox site and if I read it correct it said it now plays MP3 and Ogg Vorbis music on the iRiver H1xx!
