Creative removes FM recording....
Just read an article saying that Creative has in response to the RIAA has released a firmware upgrade that removes FM recording from the Zen series players. Apparently it is suddenly illegal to record music off of FM. How stupid is this? People have been doing this for decades, since the release of the cassette player/recorder.

I sure hope iRiver dosn't follow suit.

Something really needs to be done about the RIAA.

Oh my they are so out of control. Do you think that Creative has to tell exactly what the firmware upgrade will do such as removing the ability to record radio?

I agree, iRiver better not do that. Course, installing a firmware upgrade is optional. Not like they can force us to upgrade if we don't want to.

why does RIAA have so much power nowaday...
and seriously, why is recording off FM illegal all of sudden?

What's illegal, and where? Is this USA only?

There are many countries where you have to pay a common fee for using a certain device for a certain application. I guess here in Europe it's about 20 $ on every PC, since you might copy CDs. It's a certain amount on printers, scanners and copying machines for duplicating protected material. It's a certain licence on every fm receiver, regardless of recording. That's the reason whey there are special crippled versions of iriver's players for Europe, the 'pure' editions without fm.

So maybe it's just that they did not want to pay certain licence fees?

No, apparently all future Creative will not have FM recording.
I just got the Zen V+, not FM recording either.

If I'm not mistaken, there was another FW update which made the recording function available again.
