On the go USB
Anyone know what the deal is with this?
I have heard stuff like 'you will be able to download from cameras that support on the go USB', and 'you will be able to download from any USB device'. I don't really care which is the case, but does anyone have any intuitions on whether I will be able to dump photos from my Canon S40 onto the ihp 300 series? |

I decided to get off my lazy a$$ and figure this out. Maybe the ihp 300 series will support my camera, maybe it won't. It will depend on the ihp side much as USB plug and play now depends on the drivers present in the operating system. The following is from http://www.usb.org/developers/onthego/USB_OTG_Intro.pdf "Q. Does USB OTG have to be in both products in order to connect and operate? A. No, USB OTG products will connect to all PCs, and will also have host functionality to connect to the specific USB peripherals it supports among the 1.4 billion USB enabled products shipped to date." So, the 300 series will support whatever USB devices iRiver decides to support. I would assume that the most popular digital cameras sold for the last few years, of which the S40 is one, would be supported for transferring photos. |

I simply took my info from iriver nordic |

Now, unless iRiver is really really dumb, they wouldn't have included this technology without using it for its main purpose. Since I don't think that iRiver is really really dumb, I can assume that the nordic site pulled this blurb out of their own ass, without verifying it. If it's any consolation, they do say that 'this is preliminary information and may be changed'. I expect it will. |

A word to the wise...any information related to non-iRIver products contained on the iRiver sites should not be accepted as "truth" until verified separately.
iRiver posted some battery information that was taken in part from the battery manufacturers but left out important information such as the batteries have built-in protection circuits that will protect against damaging levels of discharge or overcharge. The USB 2 Go comments on iriver nordic are probably in the same vein...I also believe that USB 2 GO depends on the receiving unit and not the transmitting unit otherwise it doesn't make much sense. Again I caution about iRiver comments regarding non-iRIver products or features...same goes for other makers sites, sometimes the featuresets aren't properly understood by the guys in charge of the websites..

Anyways.. if people find out more about USB OTG and its implementation in the 300 series, I would be keen to find out. I actually bought a GMINI 220 because of its ability to dump photos from compact flash cards, but I returned it because it sucked too hard in other respects. For me, the ability to back up photos on the road is high on my list of priorities for a portable player. |
