40 Gig IHP. The IHP-140 !
http://www.irivernordic.com/products.php?pid=24
Something told me I should have waited. Damn it. On the other side of things, it's the same player, bigger drive. No seen added features, and god knows if any of the bugs have been fixed. I seriously doubt it though.

You beat me to it.
I think I would replace my 100 with this if, as you say, the bugs get worked out. Better warm up my e-bay account. One other positive is that the price of the 120's will probably drop. Cheers

I have seen this before from the irivernordic website, they always seem to get up to the minute information from somewhere.
If I remember correctly I think there was a post on the international forum about it, something about the admin of the site being in close contact with some high up iRiver person. Their news is usually genuine as far as I can tell. Cheers

I take this as good news...since it is "identical" to the 120, means iRiver will have to fix firmware if they are going to sell these!! Hopefully we will get some more members over here as well...

horray for more iriver users and better firmware.
personally i think carrying around 40 gb is a little excessive... i don't have THAT much music that i wish to listen to at any given time. its not like the iriver has FLAC support *hint hint*

I don't want to go down the "who needs 40gb" road, I still remember some of the arguments from the international forum when the 120 was released.
Suffice to say, some will want this amount of storage. I for one would be quite happy with this as I work away from home for a month at a time and it would mean I could take all of my music with me, encoded in a high bitrate. You could also get 50 or so normal sized albums in wav format onto this. Then file quality becomes a moot point. Different folks, different strokes Cheers

Jesus..... 40GB, seriously, with the pricing scheme for the iHP-100 and 120 it seems like this should run in the neighbourhood of $500 US or so, just a guesstimate though.
On a side note, after ordering my iHP-120 the other day, I got an email from someone who had *just* registered for ebay, claiming to be selling a "Bran new wit warrnty" iHP-120, for 250 bucks, let me just say, I don't believe this guy is legitimate for a second, most likely either a scam, or stolen goods, what do you guys think?

I can almost hear it coming..... ::cough:: IHP-160 ::cough:: After 60GB its pretty moot, hell 20GB is more than plenty for most, but always good to have a variety.

I have 3GB of music, and I can barely listen to it all, I mostly bought the iHP-120 for carrying data and stuff around on, I know I'll never fill it with all music.

Personally 20Gb is probably just right for me. There will be those who need 40Gb+ if they travel and want to take their whole music collection.
If only battery capacity could evolve at the rate HD capacity has, then we'd all be happy! |

Should I be greatful to amazon?
Amazon is taking sometime to deliever my ihp-120 which was very annoying. I now hear about the ihp-140 40gb player and ofcourse I want that (I would have always prefered it to have 40gb) but do I wait, even though we don't have a release date. It is tempting to buy the ihp-120 because it is at a great price and the ihp-140 is probably going to be loads more expensive and I can get the ihp-120 sooner rather than later. BTW the reason a 40gb would be good for me is that I have a portable DAC + amp and would like to use the highest bitrate possible as I hear ogg is almost lossless at 500 kbit/sec. P.S this was my first post on here, I also post on head-fi. Wordsworth |

Welcome Wordsworth,
If you read the thread about prices you'll see a lot of people are having delays with their iHP from Amazon. Based on past performance iRiver will be unlikely to release this new player till at least the end of February. Probably optimistic too. The questions you should ask yourself are: Do I need this now? Will I regret not waiting if the answer is no? Hope this helps. |

40GB
Welcome Wordsworth!! I think you will like this board...
When I was considering the -120, I really wanted 30gb because I can carry all of my important office files in addition to my music. Currently I have used 10GB of space with music and 5GB of office files. But I seriously cut back on the office files since I wanted to reserve drive space. 30 GB would be quite good for me right now but 40GB would be best, it would then match the size of my laptop drive, of which I have 30Gb taken up (including photos and home digicam movies of the kids). But I only used the -120 as temporary space until I back up to CDR. But 40Gs would take some time pressure off me.... I seriously considered the Creative but was turned off by all of the new products brought out over a short time...told me they were developing the product on the fly..plus the fact they relied on Red Chair for the software...price was certainly right as was the reported sound quality. No kidding, they went from Zen Firewire to Zen USB2.0 to Zen NX toZen NX 60GB, then yanked that back from market, to Zen NXtra...all within a 3-4 month period, at least from the nomadness posts. If I were the Marketing manager for iRiver, I would push really, really hard to counter all of the negative comments about service after the sale and get out a new iHP firmware before launching too many products. After all, the WWW is a very powerful place. Those guys that made "Ipodsdirtylittlesec ret" made the China Post today under the Technology section and are credited with Apple changing their battery replacement policy (went from no policy to $99 mail in) as well as convincing Apple to offer warranty. Of course, Apple denies it all. The firmware problem is a small problem compared to having to buy a whole new machine when the battery dies but I can only hope iRiver takes this seriously.

I can't, clearly, verify what iRiverNordic are indicating - regards their info source.
What i can try to do - is do some erm.. careful discrete questioning of another source such as iRiverNoridic when it comes to the iHp-140. No promises, and certainly no guarantees on how much of how little or how much i find out gets related here (probably very little put to my name anyway if there is something to tell). If i have anything, it'll be inside of a week from 2nd Jan. FG |

Interesting one this. Maybe iRiver will be releasing this in the next couple of weeks as has been suggested in the postings on the Official site.
The product is likely to exist as it uses the same Toshiba drives as the iPod. Maybe this has been the delay in the firmware release (to add extra functions). Hopefully we'll get many off the Prozac soon (especially Coreman, who has done more to find out about new firmware than anyone)! It would make sense that they don't want to announce it in the run up to Xmas and deprive themselves of sales. |

Hmm
As you can see, I'm still a bit skeptical (sp?!!) about the holding back of a significant firmware upgrade. If iRiver did have a significant firmware upgrade in the works, they probably would have announced at least that it was 'forthcoming' in order to boost sales in the Christmas period. - Odie

iRiver have been very secretive about their potential developments. The only recent exception has been Ogg support, though I'd guess they were already confident they could do it.
My feeling is that we won't know exactly what is going to be in a firmare until it is finished. The beta release is unusual for iRiver and I did wonder if this was a stop-gap measure before a bigger release? P.S. It can be spelt skeptical or sceptical! |

The Japanese amazon is already advertising the 140 for sale, they are specifying a 3 day waiting period. Their price is around 70,000 yen compared to the 120's 64,000 yen.
According to the original poster of this news on the international forum, the forum admin at irivernordic says it will be on sale in Sweden within a week. If thats true then iRiver certainly kept this one quiet. In regards to new firmwares I just wonder what is going on at iRiver, if you look at the new firmware announcement for the iFP's they actually admit that the firmware is far from perfect. Was it a rushed job to keep their iFP customers happy at Christmas and what are they up to ?? See Here There are a few interesting quotes there, like are iRiver developing a ripper/ transcoder or what ?? Cheers
