Looking for FREE and LEGAL songs to fill up your player???
Well, the day has finally come when MP3.com went back online under it's new management, CNET. The new system is still in a VERY early stage, but it should be seeing improvements constantly!!!
Access to their forums Access to the music Now if you ever hear anyone, anywhere, whining because they don't know what to put on their player because they have 15GB or 35GB etc. of free space and they have already ripped all of their CD's........tell them to go to download.music.com for all the free music they could ever want.....and to never whine again!!!! Yes I am aware that the majority the content there is of poor quality and not professionally recorded.......but where else are you going to find FREE and LEGAL music (thousands of songs, soon to be millions like the former mp3.com)?? (with the exception of twisting the cap off of a pepsi bottle and winning an iTunes download that can't be put on an iRiver HDD product) Nowhere else!! It's all free and legal and as of now, no registration is required. Back in the day, I was on mp3.com all the time finding new bands and downloading stuff. I burned lots of CD's of my favorite artists and listened to them all the time. Back then they would only accept 128kbps MP3's......but now the requirement is 192kbps so it's a little better. I think this is great news and the majority of people with DAP's can benefit from it. So go and check out some new and free music!!

The music submitted to the site by artists is submitted pursuant to Cnet's terms, one of which (currently) is that patrons will not be charged to download it. This is not all that uncommon, for new artists or even for established artists making some limited songs available from a new CD as a form of marketing.

I quickly viewed the site myself and there seems to be a vast list of possible download options there. Most of which is unknown music to me. It would seem the artists are using this site as a possible jumping off platform to stardom.....good for them.
I can not speak for the quality of the encodes or their format\bitrate but sometime you get what you pay for. If I was looking for music to fill up my player I wouold first head to the public library (yes most have CD to borrow). The second place would be to borrow copies from friends. The last place I would go is download of lossy codecs. Lossless is another issue but lets not go there. sdz

Yes, the CNET 'run' mp3.com is indeed legal.
The explanation given earlier, about artists submitting their recordings pursuant to CNET terms that make the downloads available at no fee.. is indeed fully legal. As long as whoever (the artist, where solo, the band.. or their songwriter/arranger.. where applic) submitted the recording has the right to submit on behalf of self (clearly, where it's their own total creation.. with songwriter/arranger permission if someone else did that bit for them), then it's legit. Same goes for PeopleSound and the other one (i forget the name) that emerged to fill in the gap where mp3.com stagnated before. Dunno how the garageband site sits, mind - as unless the material they hold (formerly of mp3.com use) sits in the public domain (rights wise), they still need band/artist/songwriter/rights-holder permission since the agreement the holders had with mp3.com isn't automaticially transferrable to garageband unless garageband made the appropriate legal transfer of rights arrangement. I mention that of interest, for reference - however, it's highly likely that got sorted and squared up (garageband re-distributing former mp3.com content) as most of these 'showcase' providers do tend to play it straight as far as legal rights adherence go.

it would make sense - cnet probably being the worlds largest reviewer of all things that have a current running through them wouldnt want to get on the wrong side of the law in this instance.

i was going to say "it's been under cnet management for a while," but then realized how old this was.
and some of the stuff on there is actually quite excellent.
