Gmail's new invites?

I just signed into my Gmail today, and now in the bottom left hand corner where it use to have the link for inviting people..... it has something else. This something else is different than the normal "you have X more invites". Now it has a direct input for email addresses and now it tells me I have 50 invites left!!

Is this the same for anyone else with gmail?

It would seem as though google is really pushing for everyone who wants a gmail account can now have one..... while still keeping it in beta and not allowing public sign-ups.

I think through the original invites pretty much everyone who wanted an account got one.

same here! i was virtually begging people to take them (i dont know why!), so i'm going to be stuck now!

I think that this looks to be the way forward. ie they are coming out of beta, sign in has improved for me too I suspect the new system is readying to just allow users to offer friends to convert and the limits there to stop spamming.

....but they're not coming out of beta.....not yet anyway....and plus, what's the point in giving away 50 invites to everyone if they're just going to go public anyway ?

the point is simple. offer people the simple way to convert users of MSN, to gmail thus increase revenue. The limit stops spammers.

but how is there revenue from gmail ? there can't be. they aren't charging for accounts, so they dont have that income

Ahh so much you must learn young swimwalker. The force is strong in this one. See the adds at the side that apple pays millions to have lots of pod ads in thats how they make the money. Each click earns money for google. spread into millions of accounts adds up quick, impulse buyers are the best targets, the computers they user dont dedicate 1Gb of space to you they just store the data very few people will fill a GB of emails. so the overall space used is a lot smaller the system will indicate if its getting anywhere near full (we are talking 100s of TBs of data overall) then they just get a few new drives plug them in and away they go again.

Simply the more users they have the more money they make, the search bar brings you to another google page with yet more targeted ads, and if you translate a page etc yet more. Google aim to swamp you subconciously into clicking. so the more services you use the more exposure you have.

yes yes, true. but as you said yourself, they have to have endless Tbs of storage. they cant really give out that many invites without backing them up (at some point), and what with people using the Gbs as additional computer storage....anyway... when was the last time you clicked on a link in your gmail inbox ?

Everyone gets them and I came on today and there where another 50. I sent 10 yesterday.

As for the comment of when did I last click one, I click sometimes if it sparks my curiousity. They do make money and lots of it through the service.

Its very easy to overlook how quick you can get that much information on a drive, you can buy standard drives for your PC and have a TB for under £700, remember to catalogue the web google needs lots of space and so uses that to help the accounts, when you log in your account is uncompressed so they save space using compression. Very few people use the thing as a drive, many dont even know its possible most cant use it anyway as 1Gb at todays connection speeds is still a long process.

Also people there is now POP support for the account so this will remove the burden on googles servers allowing you to have the emails on your computer, this means that the usage will be even less as people like businesses will use that method rather than waste connection time and bandwidth on the constant checking and refreshing.
