iriver E100 Debuts!

Today iriver Korea officially debuts the new E100! Coming in a variety of colors, the E100 is the first iriver player to come standard with FLAC support. The E100 also features a microSD card slot which will enable users to bump total capacity up to 16GB. The E100 is packed with the usual iriver features and utilizes the D*Click navigation system found on the clix 2. Built-In speakers round out the feature list and according to some early reviews, the E100 is seeing battery life of 24+ hours which is good news. Availability for the U.S. market is slated for the end of March, beginning of April, but no pricing has been made available. iriver Korea has the 8GB version retailing at 148,000WON which equates to approximately $152US.

iRiver hitting the sweet spot on price-point!?! I feel faint...... And the minimalist design is very nice. I hope this means iRiver will eventually get back into the Western markets as a serious contender again.......

Hmmm. Give me a player that's 16GB before putting a memory card in and I might consider it. There's plenty of companies now with flash players with a double figure GB memory, yet iriver seem to be stuck at 8GB. It's a shame really.

Have to agree, especially when video is part of the package. And while we're on the subject, why pick a memory card format who's capacity is also minute in comparison with regular SD cards ? Makes about ZERO sense.

All that aside, the player its self looks rather nice in all areas, though the video doesn't really show much. The guy scrolls through things in a rather disorganized fashion. But at that price point, I'm sure there will be a market for it. I might even get one for my wife *which secretly means self*.

Still, it is rather disappointing to know that if they had at least made the slot SD compatible, you could put a 32 gig card in there... Yeah, sad.

$220 for 16 gigs total... Not too bad I guess. Or is it.. Hmm.

Well I can positively confirm that the E100 does support SDHC cards and will recognize an 8GB Sandisk SDHC card. I loaded mine and played a song right off the card.

The bad news is that, like the Creative Zen, the E100 does not recognize the external memory without browsing to it seperate of the internal memory. Hopefully will be addressed in firmware down the road.

Man, I'm sorry Jeff. I should have clarified that I was talking about 8+8 gigs total, not a lone 16 gig card. I'll fix that...

And so what you're saying about browsing the memory card is that you have to browse to a separate folder (named after the mem card I guess) to get to that music, eh ? A bit of an inconvenience I'd say. Guess it would be smart to keep artist's which aren't on the internal memory exclusively on the card.

Are you going to give us a little review Jeff ? I'd love to know what you think about its sound, and the UI and navigation. And can you clarify about Line IN and OUT's in regards to recording ? I'd buy one based solely on whether or not it had recording capabilities, and relegate it to needle drop recording duties...especially if ROCKbox is ported to it.

correct, just like the Creative Zen As we know it can work the other way and be addressed by the player as part of internal memory (my cell phone does it) but as it stands now you have "internal" memory and "external" memory as they are labeled.

The sound is typical iriver to me, sounds great. The UI is almost identical to the clix 2.

Where's the flash support?! : ( I'd want to buy it if it had that.

I love my clix 2 and I LOVE that it is totally customisable. The design of this player is really nice... I just can't stand the thought of not being able to customise the interface. :s I hope iRiver don't forget about the customisations the clix 2 had.

E100 supports the same flash interface as clix2 does, but only in portrait mode.

What is the exact type of media used on board as memory ? Might this be another candidate for a 32 gig CF card replacement ?
