Fragile screen on the x20 4GB

Until tonight I've been extremely happy with my iRiver X20. It's been a brilliant player in the 2 or 3 months I've owned it. Unfortunately tonight I found the screen was cracked.

To summarize, I left my house, went into the city for a bit. Some shopping, a few games at the arcade. Had the x20 in my pocket the whole time. When I went to turn on after getting on the train home it looked like this:

The problem I have is that I don't recall a single blow to the side that could have caused this fracturing of the screen. No misuse, no accidental damage. A quick browse online reported someone having a similar problem and managed to have them replace it after a week long battle. I'm hoping I could be so lucky.

Does anyone know of any similar cases I could help use as precident?

Well the retailer refused to touch it until I called my iRiver rep who basically called me an idiot for trying to convince him the damage did not occur through mis-use.

I have to foot the bill and wait for for repairs, the time and cost of which they won't disclose until I go to retrieve my player.

Are/Did you use a case.
You probably should with something that has a easy-to-scratch screen.
If you are, when you get it back make sure it is a hard-case so its harder to scratch/crack/dirty the screen.
Also a little polystyrene doesn't hurt

All I could find in terms of protection were rubber grips. Amazingly the outer screen itself didn't have the slightest damage or scratch. Just the internal LCD screen was snapped down the middle.

Could you recommend any hard cases for when I get it back?

i am going to get mine later this week, and this really worries me. If the screen snaps by itself inside the outer protection, it's definitely a design flaw. Just like what happened to those early ipod nanos. I don't think a silica skin can prevent it from happening, and I wouldn't carry a heavy metal case for this thing. Either way, it sucks to hear what happened to you. I hope iriver will fix the problem or replace the player for you, maybe some batches are better built than others....

Well i just use a random Mossimo phone case.
Look, anything will do its just a matter of if it fits.
I know there has been a thread that showed a X20 case, if i find it ill edit it in to this post.

Just recieved my reply. The unit has to be replaced at a cost of $88AUD. Better than buying a new one but still pretty annoyed. Im going to be always keeping one eye on the location of this one at all times.

I have the same problem. I love the x20, but after having it in my backpack all day, i took it out, the outside screen didnt have a scratch but the inside looked like the one in ur pic. Can i ask how you contacted Iriver to get the repairs done and how long it took?

The same thing happened to my x20. Does anybody know what type of screen is used in the x20 and where to get it? Irivers customer service told me that it would cost about 120$ to repair. LCD Screens of that size only cost a fraction of that size

By the way: the display is a 2.2" LCD with 320 x 240 pixel (qvga).
Does anybody know if these displays are standardised, especially the size and connection?

My first post on MysticRiver, if only it culd be on a happier subject, today the LCD in my X20 broke it has 3 cracks running up just right of the bottom left corner with an oval shaped area that is black, no damadge at all to the surface of the screen only the LCD, im begining to lose faith in the X20 as its not the first problem with it I have had. About a week after i got it i realised that the battery was draing down while the player was turned off, managed to get a no-hassle exchange done on that, ut now this

my 2nd iRiver's screen cracked which sucks coz that one had the awesome random features like the remote control and playback speed changing [funny as] but apparently iRiver's warranty doesn't cover anything to do with the screens at all... so i got a new one and now im broke but as long as my X20 can hold out for longer than my first 2, im happy.
good luck. [cases should come with X20s like they did with previous iRivers]
