video encoding with vdub

If anyone is interested i have finally managed to encode videos for the X20 to .avi with VirtualDub.
All you need is VirtualDub, Xvid 1.1.2 and Lame-ACM 3.97. You can get them from www.free-codecs.com.

The settings that I've used and seem to work for most videos are:

- for video: profile@level = advanced simple @ L3, but i've changed it by deactivating B-VOPs; a bitrate of 480;
- for audio: Lame MP3 @ 44.1Khz, 128kbps CBR, Stereo

+ and the resize filter to change the video size to 320xZZZ

It is much faster than transcoding with iriver 3.

Thanks for this, I tried it and it worked perfectly.

After some testing I'm becoming convinced that the real problem actually lies in the B-VOPs. I'm no video-encoding expert, but according to wikipedia, B-Frames are frames that need to be decoded BEFORE the current frame, the problem I was having was the X20 displaying a "future"-frame through the current one, so the problem probably lies here :O . This doesn't explain why it did work on firmware 1.02 though.

Again thank you for this information .

yep, this is faster than iriver plus 3 but the convereted file is alot larger.
Use irivereter instead its fast too and the converted file is alot smaller.

Brilliant!

Absolute genius. I bought an x20 a few days ago, and have been furiously attempting every setting on virtually every downloadable piece of video conversion software I could find, and now I find you've cracked it.

Much, much faster than iriver plus 3, and infinitely more reliable than the flaky iriverter, this is definitely how I'll be encoding my video files from now on. Many, many thanks.

I've uploaded the Vdub configuration file to Mediafire. You can download it here:

X20.vcf

not only is it much faster but virtualdub gives you more video processing options.. you can crop 16:9 videos. increase the sharpness of the videos and adjust the contrast using the filters.
