Iriver X20 recording problem: sound verry low
yesterday, I bought the Iriver X20. My main purpose is to record interviews and sounds in order to make some podcasts on my website.

I also bought the Sony ECM-MS907 as an external mic which a connect on the lin-in.

As like many other iriver users, I feel a bit frustrated when listening to my recorded sounds. The main problem is that the volume is too low.

I checked
- that the settings is adjusted as line-in
- the line-in quality is high
- the volume is set as maximum (thus 20)

I was expecting that I would hear the voices and sounds aplified in my headphones, but this isn't the case. When listening to my recordings, I must put the volume at maximum to hear somewhat my voice. But when I move the external mic a little bit further away from my mouth, the sounds turns even more low.

It can be possible that this is normal and that I must adjust the volume by using an editing program like audacity, but I wanted to be sure. It is also strange that the voice-in volume is normal (thus loudlier that the line-in).

Can there be another problem? Should I hear my recordings aplified through my earphones while recording? Is is normal that the volume of the music on my iriver is 10 times as hard as my recorded interviews?

Ooops!
NOTE: The x20 does not have Mic in!! It only supports line in, wich is why the sound act the way it does!

I'm not familiar with the ECM-MS907, but you will probably need a mic preamp to go between the mic and the X20 line in. This will boost the mic level to a line level signal and should solve your problem.

What do you mean with mic in? What's the difference with line in? i know the x20 has got a voice in (built-in microphone) and a line in (for external mic), but I'm not sure if this is what you mean.

Strange, bacause I thought that the Iriver X20 has a inbuilt preamp that amplifies the mic? (note: the sony is a battery-mic)

Well, for example, my Iriver ifp 795 has both mic in AND line in. I'm not sure about the difference between them both, but I do know that if i switch from mic in to line in on the player and I still use the mic, I get the same trouble as YOU get when you are recording: if youre really close you can speak in it but as soon as you move away, just like 20cm, it's all quiet. BUT, when i change the settings to ext. mic insead, I can be 10m away and it still sounds loud and clear.
So I think line in is more sensetive to volymchanges and is therefor more suitable for line in recording (you know when you plug it in to directly record from the stereo or something) and not very good for mic recording.

(sorry for my bad english, I am only a 15year old swedish boy, and I could very well be very wrong about all this. But still, this is my experience about the difference)

EDIT: I also asked one working with iriver if I could record with a mic on a player with Line in and he said: No, it must have mic in for that.

So I guess I have bought the wrong Iriver ... I should have bought one with a mic in instead of only a Mic in.

what's the problem? As said, the recording function is ok with voice-in, every word clear, even on 10m distance. Use voice in, perhaps your Sony ECM-MS907 is the problem.

It's true. You need a preamp as well as a mic. Try soundprofessionals.c om They have preamplified mics or you can buy the preamp and mic separately.

Line in is diff from mic-inputs found on minidiscs.

line in has no pre amplifier. mics need a preamplifier. even if they are battery powered. it's just the way these signals work.

ebay has some for relatively cheap, made especially for this purpose (mp3 player without mic-in) - search "line-in preamplifier"
