Navigating with the X20 Thumbwheel
Hello everyone - forgive me, this is my first post!
I love the X20 in every way, except the thumbwheel! To me, it's a little hard to get traction on, and navigating a long list of albums or artists can take so many rotations it's stupid! Why, oh why doesn't holding down the [V] and [^] buttons at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock on the wheel make the list scroll down and up respectively? It would make navigating so much easier! As far as I can see, the only function they have currently is changing FM channels. (And yes, I've set the scroll wheel setting to x3!) Do iRiver listen to suggestions? And if so, what's the best way of making them? Of course, the purpose of this post is to see what other users think of the scroll wheel and whether the idea with the [V] and [^] buttons gets any votes from users. I still love it, I just would love it more if I didn't have to go round and round and round and round just to get to albums / tracks etc. starting with 'M..' ! Pete |

I think you will find that option is the text scroll speed you have changed. IE the song / album text on the now playing screen, when the text is to long to fit on the screen.
As far as i know there is no menu / thumb wheel scroll speed. Paul |

Its certainly something that they should look at adding.
I find that the first few turns are ok, but after that the traction is all gone and difficult to use. I usually leave it on shuffle + repeat and let it crank out the music, so its not very often the wheel gets used anyway. iRiver are usually pretty good and fixing issues, and adding features. So fingers crossed things model is no different. From what i have read, the x20 was designed and made by another OEM, I believe this is the first player that had done this with. All three others had been designed and manufactured them self. |

Only issue I had was a fear of putting too much pressure on it and killing it. Once I realised you can put decent pressure on it I have no issues. Can scroll top to bottom without any hassle.

Maybe I'm missing something (if so please enlighten me
e.g. From main menu I can select Music > Albums > select an Album > view the album tracks. To go back to main menu I simply keep hitting the < arrow. However, once I press > to start an album track I can't find a way to navigate back to the Music or Album menu. If I pause the track I can press ^ to take me back to the tracks on the selected album, but cannot get back any further & have to hit the main menu button & navigate down again. Perhaps this is a small gripe from someone used to the ipod clickwheel, but given iriver seem to be adopting the ipod clickwheel style I'm sure they could tweak the software to enable the < arrow to navigate back to the main menu screen. Does anyone know of a workaround? |

The scroll wheel on mine can stuff up occasionally, but its only for a very short period of time so I'm not too worried.
Has anyone noticed how easily this thing traps dust though? Whenever I'm using my X20 in the sun, I notice lots of dust caught insides the gaps....

Perhaps something like Invisible shield or Best Skin Ever would fix the dust problem? I don't know and they wouldn't have customized designs so early on.
Back to navigation though... Can you use the x20 with one hand? (I understand it's not designed to be used in portrait mode which would make this somewhat awkward but I'd like to know anyway.) Thanks. Last edited by yoghurtaddict : May 3rd, 2007 at 10:20 PM. |

You can use it with one hand without any trouble. Portrait mode is unfortunately something that MAYBE we'll see in a future firmware but looking at the changes from version to version, can't really see when that's going to happen
