X20 crashed and stuck - only 1 day old. help
Hi
i got my x20 8gb yesterday and made a long playlist of several gigs in windows media player 11 and set it syncing and went to bed. i've come back to it this morning to find an error message on media player and the player crashed. i've removed the battery a couple of times to reset it but it just gets stuck at the initialising screen. i can't get it past this to format it or try and reinstall the firmware or anything. any help would be much appreciated cheers |

no such reset button unfortunately. all my previous players have had one. it's easily returnable but that makes me wary of getting it again. it might just be this player that's faulty but if a replacement crashes further down the line its not as easy to return when you've been using it for a while.
thanks anyway |

You get at least a year's warranty - so long as you keep your receipt, it's no harder to return it to the manufacturer 364 days after purchase than it is 1 day after purchase.
You're the only person who has reported such a problem, so I would be inclined to say that you're just unlucky enough to have a duff player and that getting it replaced under warranty (or maybe, if you're lucky, at the shop you bought it from - which would be quicker) is the answer. |

This will prob not help, but try it. Mine was having a spaz last week, it had sound but no screen. Then it refused to switch on, removing the battery did nothing. I put the hold button on hold and tried switching it on. It forced the screen to display the padlock symbol. Switched hold off, and it has worked ever since.
Have you tried just sticking the USB cable in and see if that forces it on? |

Hi all. I'm new here having only just bought a 4GB x20. I am having pretty much the same problem, where after I let it fully charge for the prescribed period without interrupting it I loaded some files onto it. When I went to turn it on away from the computer, the initializing screen comes up with "build library..." also displayed. Every time I turn it on this happens & it stays this way until it automatically turns itself off. I tried reconnecting it to the computer but it won't recognize it but the player will turn on & the above happens, except it wont auto off. I only bought this baby yesterday & was so looking forward to using it! Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: I just called the iriver support phone line for my state & the guy said to just return it to the place of purchase as it is just a fault with the player, & that it will take a while to replace it. Damn my luck! My last mp4 played died after a short life too! I hope this x20 all it's cracked up to be. Last edited by jadeadonia : April 10th, 2007 at 06:25 PM. |

Good news & bad news.
The good news: Oh my gosh! I was so happy because I got a replacement easy as & they transferred it from another store within a single day as well! Yay! The Bad news: I plugged it in, fully charged it, & finally after 3 hours I loaded files onto it. Sweet. I then safely disconnected it, only to see the screen flash up "Building initial library, please wait" for about 2 seconds (I didn't see it long enough to be sure) & then "Build Library". I thought it might need some time so I left it overnight & it was still going! & the hourglass always freezes at the same spot! It has the exact same problem as the first one had! What am I doing wrong? Have I got just absolute rotten luck or have I made a slip up? I read the manual..... |

Build library shouldn't take longer as 5 sec..
Perhaps you can try the other connection type to move files (MTP/MSC) or it might have something to do with how much space you use. How much gigs of files you moved onto the player? |

I'd take it back again - it doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. And anyway, you shouldn't be ABLE to stuff it up like that just by trying to load stuff on to it. Sounds like there is a bit of a problem in some of the devices... It is worth it in the end though, once you get a working one (eventually), they are very good. Although loading video is a problem... |

Video has to be converted properly so use either WMP11 or iriver Plus 3 (which I think is faster). iriver Plus 3 converts into *.avi and WMP11 converts into *.wmv. Don't know why. (NB: iriver Plus 3 automatically enables the Video tab upon connecting the X20 in MSC mode)

Thank you everyone for all your help & advice. I was a little stressed when all this came about so thanks heaps. Update: Luckily for me, the Iriver service center for my state is only 2 suburbs away so instead of returning the second one to the place of purchase we called them & took it straight in. They had a look at it & said the latest batch that they had shipped to Australia may all have a default in the actual device or faulty part. They then organized for a replacement to be brought up from Melbourne (I live in Brisbane) which should only take 3-4 days. The guys I dealt with were Brad & Cameron, & I only mention this because they were very helpful & informative & nothing was too much trouble for them. Thank you heaps!
In answer to your questions: When we called the service center they said it may be our computer but we provided them with our specifications & they said that it shouldn't be the problem. The first & second time I didn't overload it & only moved maybe 0.8 of a GB on at once, just to test it out before I loaded my entire library on. & I am using Iriver plus 3, so I'll use that when dealing with all my video transfers & conversions. |

I had the same problem - bought it on Monday, used it all day, then all day Tuesday - loaded some more MP3s on it this morning and it hangs at build library.
Called iRiver support for Perth and they said they'll have to send it to Melbourne and it'll take 3 weeks (!?) but then said as I had just bought it, JB Hifi should replace it for me on the spot. I'm a little worried as I suspect it may be MP3s with corrupt ID3 tags or something causing this issue - and as there is no way to recover without replacing the unit, what is stopping this from happening again (short of going through a few thousand MP3s, stripping all tags and re-tagging them all?!). Cheers. |

same problem here... i also supect it might be id3 tags...
did someone report this to iriver (website or something?) maybe if enough of us write about it they can come up with a firmware fix... maybe a way to skip the library building... |

So it's quite normal that windows wants to use theire own codec As for Iriver plus 3 well AVI is much better than WMV for movies Glad they didn't use AVI codec Still the best way to convert your movie is with Virtualdub or virtualdubmod |

Well, took mine back to my retailer - JB Hi-Fi - and demanded (and received) a refund as iRiver couldn't guaranteed this wouldn't happen again.
I just Creative Zen Touch out of a box it's been sitting in for three years (clicking/dead HDD) and gave it a bit of a bashing as suggested on the Nomadness Forums - and it's working again! Woot! Saved me $300 =) |

Well I though I was lucky and that my X20 was fine and did not have this issue. Well that proved to be wrong last night.
Connected it upto my PC, resync with WMP 11. After 1/2 I noticed it was just sitting there not doing anything, although the screen did have 'deleteing files do not disconnect'. Clicked cancel sync within WMP 11. WMP sync stopped, but X20 still have 'Deleting files do not disconnect' on it. Left for another 1/2 hr, and no change.. So pressed the power button and it does nto power off. Took out battery, put back in, and now am greeted with the 'Initializing...' screen. |
