X20 microSDHC support?

I've been looking around for a decent replacement for my iHP-100, which deserves its place in a museum by now, even though its still working fine.

The new X20 model has drawn my attention since I'm looking for a flash-based player, because I don't necessarily need to carry my complete mp3 collection around all the time.

In my opinion its a pretty bad choice by iRiver to put a microSD slot on the X20, instead of a normal one like on the Cowon D2, since it matters quite a lot when it comes to expanding the storagespace. On the other hand, iRiver might have done it on purpose so we can buy one of their nice new mp3players every year. (not gonna happen in my case :P)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows, or has found, any info on the X20 supporting microSDHC cards out of the box. 4gb versions of these cards should be available pretty soon, which would make this player more interesting than the clix2, for me.
Though I'd imagine it would be possible to add support for this in a firmware update.

You mentioned the d2, FYI it has beta firmware released already to support sdhc cards with the proper firmware due this Friday/next week. 8gb sdhc cards are available now for us$60. I know this doesnt answer your question but it may be an alternative.

Yes, that's actually the reason I made this topic, sorry if that was unclear.

If the D2 is going to support 32gb sdhc cards in the future, the choice would be farely easy. Unless, ofcourse, the X20 is going to support bigger microSDHC cards, although I've no idea what the theoretical maximum space on one of those would be. I can't seem to find any chart/roadmap about the development of normal sd cards compared to micro. Anyone with more info on that?

Can't say I like the idea of the touchscreen on the D2 by the way, but I do want a MP3 player with expandable memory.

A few people dont, but i have two toys now that have a touch screen and i wont buy any new gadget unless it has one, they are so much fun.

Back on topic, maybe it would pay you to email sandisk or a sd card manufacture and ask

I have just sent of an email to IRIVER, hopefully with an answer within a few days.
I have had my 8gb X20 for a day now and loving it. Menu's are great, fast, and also looks good!!! Sound quality, well its not the best IRIVER i have heard, but is still very good. Havent had a chance to check out the battery, but has been going strong still on full bars after 3hrs or so!!

I will re post if I receive an answer.

It has only just been released and not even listed on their website or support forums at this stage.
Once they release that info on their site i guess they will provide info of other accessories, i.e. covers, batteries ect.
But till then maybe check your local phone shop they may have a similar battery, it looks just like a normal mobile phone battery.

Second source for batteries?

This is not the same brand as iRiver but the same manufacturer is joytoto:
http://www.dealadeal.com/cart/select...96245&view.htm

Bestbuy had the battery listed for under $11 USD, but their web site is no better than the Insignia's attempt at firmware upgrades. Read "inmature"
I found a korean site that had the same JBP443448 joytoto model number battery in the X20. You can check out anythinbutipod forums for more details.

I use a second player as a backup and primary battery charger.
Purchased the Insignia's on ebay from the 2ndturn, same company as dealadeal.com. Hear tell that their shipping service is getting numorous complaints, YMMV

If you do take the plung on the Insignia, please reply on your experiance.

If any X20 owner(s) who live in Oregon would like to compare between the NS-DV4G and iRivers version, please post here. I work in Salem and Stayton is home.
I have some 2GB cards with avi videos to do side by side

How does it compare to the Sandisk Sansa e280?

As far as I can see they look identical. I much prefer the look of the Sandisk Sansa (that white control wheel on the X20!!!) but the X20 has a speaker, that and OGG support are only two things I can see extra.

Is there anything else? Thanks

Firstly, why would he necessarily be able to answer that?
Unless he's used a Sansa e2x0 extensively, he's not going to be able to make an informed comment on that.

And, you've got your thread on the subject, so wait for people to answer as opposed to spamming other threads.

Thank you for contacting iriver Customer Service.

Currently the iriver X20 Series MP3 Players do support only microSD cards with a capacity of maximum 2GB.

An information for the support of the new microSDHC cards we have been not given yet.

So our Engineers have to check this first and then we can provide with detailed information.

For further enquiries please feel free to contact us again at anytime.

Thanks Paul.

To be fair I guess (AFAIK) Micro SDHC hasn't been released yet, so I guess we'll just have to wait. I love where he says "Currently the iriver X20 Series MP3 Players do support only microSD cards". Are they're going to provide a Compact Flash adapter then?

As far as I can also tell this looks identical to the Sansa E200 Series, except those don't have the yucky white control wheel.

Calm down tiger . 4Gb MicroSD isn't even out yet, that's not due until later this year. I doubt we'll see 8Gb, 10Gb, 12Gb for eons.

Until the cards are out Firmware upgrades won't be available, so for now it's 2Gb max. I too though hope it at least supports 4Gb.

.... i know that..

4gb in this year for sure.... but in the future more. i don't need 16.12 or 10.... but 8 or 4gb i hope.
i think if thy can mod their firmware and ad Gapless playback and microsd 4gb card i won't need rockbox....

or an 12gb version of X20 it would be GREAT and i won't need microsd cards (at least no SDHC)

iRiver have never managed to produce a DAP with gapless playback.
And the chances are that if they ever do, it'll be a feature the DAP in question is designed with, not something that's added-on later.

And you do realise that if there is a '2nd Gen' X20, it'll be more likely to go up to 16GB, as opposed to 12.
Flash memory always doubles in capacity, it's always a power of 2 increase.

Hopefully they'll make a larger scroll wheel.

And an option to get one without that god awful white scroll wheel. What were they thinking.

I'd settle for a 12Gb Nano sized MP3 Player but 15-16Gb would be ideal. I've no need for any more but 10Gb isn't enough. I like Nano sized players, full size is to big for me.

No links, no source, just common sense.
Everyone knows that flash memory always doubles.

I know but that's not what you said, you said a 2G X20 was coming. I was responding to that. Your statement reads pretty conclusively.

A typo - it should've read 'if there is a '2nd Gen' X20...'

No, it really doesn't. You have to go out of your way to interpret it like that.

Can tell you for a fact it doesn't support 4Gb HC cards. Cos I just got one. And it doesn't. Not on Firmware 1.2 anyway. As to if it will with an upgrade I have no idea.
