700 File Limit on the T10 random track playing

This really isn't important, because I know how to prevent/deal with it, but I was wondering WHY it happens.

I rip audiobook CDs from the library so I can listen to them on my T10. Everything works fine -- until I forget that no matter how many tracks/files are put on the player, only 700 will play.

I had a audiobook that had 10 discs with 99 tracks each. Yes, 99. I forgot about the limit and put them all on the player. Of course only 700 tracks /files out of the 1000 are going to work. I was just curious as to how the player decides which 700 tracks (files) are valid. I noticed that the player will play a track and not go to the next track but seems to randomly go somewhere else and start playing that track. And this only happens if there are too many files/tracks on the player.

Why doesn't it just go in order of the name of the files and quit after 700. I do name the tracks to show the CD number and track number, i.e., Revenge 01-01, Revenge 01-02, Revenge 01-03 . . . .; and then Revenge 02-01, Revenge 02-02, Revenge 02-03.

Short answer is: Dunno

You could email iriver but they'd likely tell you "when the 700 file limit is exceeded the player may begin behaving erratically", as if you didn't already know that.

10 discs with 99 tracks each is an awful lot of very small files. To get the entire book on the player at once you could try ripping differently, to combine all those little tracks into less. That doesn't help you now that they're already ripped, but this will and it's freeware:

Well I downloaded it. It works fine. Except it wreaks havoc with the previous installed Turbo Tax. It causes Turbo Tax to load and look for updates. Any suggestions?

Wow, that's really weird.

Apparently Media Join conflicts in some way with the version of Turbo Tax you're using, or more likely Turbo Tax's automatic updater which is probably running in the background every time you start Windows. I can't test it, have the current version of Media Join but not the current version of Turbo Tax as don't use it anymore.

One question though. Does Turbo Tax load itself in stand-by mode every time Windows starts? You can tell by checking to see if it's in the Startup folder (StartButton->Programs->Startup) or if it's icon is in the system tray. (System tray is the one on the right, next to the clock display. Icons on the left, nearest the Start button are not actually running, those are just Quick Start icons.) If Turbo Tax is in Startup/System Tray try shutting it down before using Media Join.

Many programs load themselves (or some component) upon Windows startup, even though they are not programs that are used frequently. The most frequent components loaded at Startup are automatic update searchers. I have several programs that load such components, but have removed them all from Startup with the exception of security software updaters. Just don't need all that extraneous crap running all the time, instead preferring to manually check for updates on programs other than security updates.

Another suggestion is to email the developer of Media Join about this very specific problem. Try to include as much relevant information as possible, such as version of Windows and version numbers of Media Join and Turbo Tax. Just because an application is freeware does not mean the developer doesn't support it. Actually, they appreciate hearing about conflicts and/or problems so they may continue to improve their program.

Thanks for your suggestion. I ran msconfig to look at the startup files. Although there are a lot of files that I can't make sense of, I can't see anything that seems to relate to Turbo Tax. Nor are any mysterious icons in in trays

I'll try and track the conflict and send the info to Media Join as you suggested. Intuit puts out a new Turbo Tax program every year; Media Join developers could just be beating their heads against the wall on this one!

It may not be an issue anyway. I'll probably uninstall Turbo Tax. It isn't any good any more anyway. I just kept it there until I was sure my taxes were accepted and then fogot about it! (Now you reminded me . . .I better apply for that property tax refund!).

Thanks again

K
