a new t30 random restarting adventure

Hi, everyone. I searched around and I don't think anyone has mentioned this particular problem here yet.

As I'm sure will become immediately apparent, I'm new, I'm not too clever with computers, and I throw myself at the mercy of your greater knowledge and wisdom. I'm hoping that what's happened to me has happened to someone somewhere before.

My iRiver T30 keeps restarting, just the way elektorronikci described here, but in a different situation. For me, I can turn on my device, browse around, choose songs, change settings, whatever, but the second that I hit play, the endless rebooting starts (which I stop every time in the same way described).

This happened three or five times over the past few months but I was always able to solve it by reconnecting the device to my computer and starting fresh, but that's not working now. I can't think of anything that's changed firmware- or software-wise between now and then.

By the way, I'm on XP and using Napster and firmware v 1.71.

Any advice that could be dumbed down for this chops-less girl? Many many thanks, a_livia

Well, basically, if you have a single file in a directory and you play it, if you try to skip you get this. Also, if you have a random repeat on for the directory then this happens when the track has finished playing.

Older firmware didn't have this problem. Firmware 1.75 is out for the T30 Korean version, but not one for a pure player like mine (I need the English, pure, UMS version). From a look at the Korean fixes it seems as if this bug is fixed in it (though getting that from the Korean text is a bit shakey).

So, we are awaiting the full range of T30 updates from iRiver. This seems to be taking a looooong time.

If your problem is the same (similar?) then this might solve it.

I'm sorry to be slow, but by "single file in a directory" you mean do I have any songs in a folder by themselves, right? I guess I do (have artists with only one song) due to playlists, etc. But I don't have them set to shuffle or anything. And this doesn't happen only when I try to skip. From the second I turn it on, if I hit play at whatever song it's on, it happens. I can't make it play a thing.

I'll try the Firmware 1.75 and see how I do. (My Korean sucks, of course.)

This may be a stupid question, but it wouldn't be a good idea to go back to the prior version of Firmware until the new version is released, would it?

Dont try the Korean firmware unless you are sure you have a non-pure UMS player. Mine is pure so I can't touch it.

Since you seem to have a development on the problem that you can't work around (Odd music files? Bad firmware flash? Something like that perhaps...), reverting to a previous firmware might have an effect. It can't hurt. Make sure you have a fresh battery before you flash though.

Oh yes, and a 'directory' is another name for a folder. Directory is an older term but is in common use. Also, each of your songs is a music data file. So you got the message perfectly.

Thanks for the tip. How can I tell if it's a non-pure UMS player, though?

It might have been a bad firmware flash, though I can't remember for sure, but I think it worked since I upgraded. I don't think it's the music files. I've wiped it clean several times and put different music on the player, and the problem stays the same. Gotta love Napster.

If you know off the top of your head, any clue as to where I could find the old firmware? I didn't save a version on my hard drive, something which is turning out to be stupid.

Thanks for explaining it in laygirl's terms for me. Mine is pure, so no Korean fix for me, I guess.

And thanks for posting the link to the firmware. Just so I'm clear here, I would want the T30 UMS Version 1.70 (not the MTP version), right? I just don't want to do any irreparable damage. I know these players don't like it when you give them an identity crisis.

I used the iriver firmware updater http://www.iriver.com/html/support/f...ew.asp?idx=387 and it updates to version 1.71p and switched to ums (which I've had no trouble with) it also can be used to reload firmware to your player. I'm not sure how to go back to earlier firmware so you'll need someone else's (like bongmong) expertise for that .
It may be worth trying to reflash your firmware with 1.71 but as mentioned make sure your player has a fully charged battery.

This is where the Korean 1.75 firmware is listed.

To update the firmware manually instead of using the updater:

UMS - drop the hex file onto the player, in the 'root' directory (folder), which means not in any folder at all.

MTP - drop the hex file into the 'Data' folder (this is actually a fake folder, this probably won't matter to you).

I imagine you could downgrade the firmware with this method. I haven't actually done so, but I see no reason for iRiver to block doing such.

NOTE: To change from MTP to UMS (or back) you have to do things a little differently. Other threads describe this, but only use the newer procedures as the method has changed since the early days.
