Upgrading T30 firmware from 1.22 to 1.71

I have a MTP T30 bought in canada. Currently its at 1.22 version firmware. Today i downloaded the firmware updater and have been trying to update it to 1.71. The whole process goes fine and dandy until the screen where it says to disconnect your device and it will reboot several times to update the firmware.

When i disconnect the device from the computer, it shuts down and comes back on and just stays like that (until it turns off because of the idle shut down time). It is not rebooting on its own. I checked the System Info and its still showing as 1.22

-I have formatted the device and loaded default settings
-Also noticed that when i hook the device to the computer, instead of going straight to the music folders, i first get an icon that says FAT16 and then when i click on it, i can go in to the music folders.

I am having the EXACT same problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
I have tried copying the 1.63 firmware right into the data folder and still nothing. The update software doesn't do it either.

go to http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/iriverupdate/
download the file for T30P MTP
(the P means for the T30 without the radio, which I think you would have)
plug the T30 into your computer, go to My Computer & click on the iriver icon
unzip the file you downloaded & drag the hex file into the data folder of iriver
Now when you unplug your T30 it will update. You can check that it worked by looking in settings, advanced, system info.

Thanks to June post this forum by BIGMAN_P: solved my problem after hours of wasted time. Official iriver site puts wong hex file on your device & does not respond to requests for help.

I posted this before - guaranteed, and relatively easy fix, has worked on 4 T30's so far (all bought in Canada)

I had success this way. I ran the iriver updater 1.5, and when it asked where I got it, Europe or USA, I said Europe. The device then did upgrade to 1.71 MTP. Previously, it allowed me to pick the option, but never did upgrade, but this did it. THEN, I ran the iriver updater again, and, this time, it gave me the MTP<>UMS choice, and I took UMS, and it worked.....yes, really. I don't know if this is just crappy QA on their updater, or what, but I'd do it fast if you want to do it at all.

Thanks so much for posting the "Choosing Europe" instead of USA advice!!
I bought my T30 last night in West Palm Beach, Florida (last I checked still part of the U.S.) and was having the same problem as the original poster.
Chose "Bought in Europe" as you suggested, and updated great!
Now keep your fingers crossed I can load all my Audible.com books on there and listen with no problems........
