Howto upgrade a T30 to a UMS player
What a sad tale. It took me about an hour to figure out the EXACT
steps I had to take to upgrade my T30 to a UMS player. Christ, surely iRive could have made this easier! But no, they basically assume that you can read their minds. Couple that with a truly worthless update application, and you will have mass confusion. Anyway, here is my success story. Many thanks to those who have trod this path before me. Especially VeejayRecords... Here was my setup: Windows XP SP2 My 1GB T30 was running this version of firmware: V 1.22P The P stands for Pure (whatever that means). The Upgrade ----------- First I went to this site: http://www.mtp-ums.net/ This site directed me to: http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/iriverupdate/ I downloaded this particular version of the firmware (very important, nothing else worked!): http://www.iriverplus.com/tools/MTP/...1119_P_ENG.ZIP I unzipped this file, and then, using Windows Explorer, copied these 3 files to the \Data directory of the iRiver T30: firmware.inf T30.gif T30_MPURE.HEX That is, NOT T30.HEX, NOT T30_PURE.HEX. No, T30_MPURE.HEX. Then I unplugged the T30 and waited until it was done. This updated the 1.22P MTP firmware to 1.71P MTP firmware. As VeejayRecords pointed out, this is a very important step. I then ran the iRiver updater (the piece of crap program): http://www.iriveramerica.com/downloa...areUpdater.zip I Unzipped this file, and ran the executable. The rest is pretty self-explanatory. It will allow you to convert the MTP player to a UMS player. Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! If you have any questions about the updater, go here: http://www.iriveramerica.com/support/mtpupdate/ Postscript ---------------- May these explicit instructions help the next poor sap who buys a T30 Now, now, I actually am enjoying this player, and considering it only cost 56 bucks at Amazon, it was a very good buy.. |

Amen!
AMEN!
It is inDEED glorious! I was able to upgrade my T10 to UMS by following your excellent instructions and I am a very happy techie. How wonderful to have control over my files. My own directories on my own MP3. Why would anyone do it any other way? (rhetorical question, I do not want an anwer) I just want to add a few notes for the next guy that comes along. It(upgrading to UMS) is a treacherous path. First of all Iriver expicitly states in their tech support page that you can not use UMS on the T10, T30 etc. Wrong! Secondly, the files that you have to use is not one of the ones called UMS, but rather a file refered to as an MTP type. Finally the actually choice to install UMS is not given until you have seemingly already committed to MTP in the "downloader". Then you have to be carefull to notice the option to install UMS instead of MTP. At this point I wonder if I could have simply used the standerd MTP firmware upgrade on the Iriver site to do the same thing. Many thanks to all of those who tried to help me. I was blind but now I see the light. It DOES seem like Iriver is trying to hide the fact that they are providing UMS. The T10 is great. The controls are familiar to me and the sound is good (headphones could be better). It seems like AGC is gone(or hybridized) but the record still works well at fairly high volumes. T10 has a carabeaner style belt clip which is going to keep my device from getting sweaty while hiking and free up some precious pocket space. Thanks also to those who provide and maintain this discussion group. Happy listening. |

Thank you for the explicit instructions that could not be found anywhere else.
Now I just need to go home and see how my mac recognizes the T30. I guess I still will not be able to use songs purchased from itunes. (?) |

I had no problems switching to MSU, other than the fact that the first time I ran the updater I skipped through the screens too fast and didn't see the button on the left hand side which lets you switch. I didn't have to go to any third party websites, I just ran the updater I downloaded from Iriver and it worked fine.
