Tech support known Firmware Updater Problems with T30

To continue the story of my never ending attempt to upgrade my just purchased T30 to an UMS device, I used a friend's XP OS where the T30 was recognized immediately. I then loaded the firmware updater and it identified the unit perfectly. I put it through the steps and unplugged the unit from the USB connection.

I didn't see it flash off and on, but thought nothing of it. When I got home and plugged into my Windows 2000 pro with MTP kit installed, once again the browser didn't recognize it as an UMS but it was recognized by WMP 9 and my device manager.

Puzzled, I checked the settings menu on the unit and noticed I still had the 1.03P firmware loaded! I called Iriver and the customer support rep told me that there "is a known issue with the firmware updater" and he then sent me the UMS zip file which has to be unzipped and manually copied to the data directory of the unit - once again in an XP machine.

Why did Iriver ever think of issuing a MTP device in the first place? Other than beginners and novices, who wants to copy files using the bloated WMP of all things. One WindowsKey/e hotkey push and the windows explorer is opened and ready for dragging or c&p.

you could have avoided all of your problems if you listened to the PC system requirements.

I'm in a hurry now, but I'll post the link later.

The firmware updater and it's latest update was specifically issued to turn the T30 into a UMS device for recognition on all operating systems. I've owned Iriver products before, and I like the idea of buying something that has some decent wattage and oomph. I'm not going to upgrade to XP which is an inferior OS and bloated with a cartoonish GUI designed for beginners and casual users. I reserve comment on Vista until I see what security MS has built into it.

By the way, thanks for your armband recommendation. I ordered one and hope to receive it soon.

I'm going to try it again tomorrow with the Firmware updater before I do the manual upgrade. All this has forced me to learn the menu, so I now I know how to check firmware versions right after the update is finished.
