T-10 Rebooting Intermittantly

I have a new T-10 (upgraded the firmware to 1.7) which had seemed to be working fine until this past week. I have some songs and podcasts on it along with one Audio Book from NetLibray which is 11 hours long.

This Audio Book played fine up to hour 3 when I stopped it. I then played it the next day (skipping up to hour 3) to a little past hour 4 where I stopped it again.

The next day I skipped up to hour 4 and started to play it. About 10 minutes later the T10 rebooted. I restarted the Audio Book again, skipping up to the point it rebooted at, but it did the same thing. I then skipped a few minutes past the point where it rebooted and it played okay for a few minutes but then once again rebooted.

I thought perhaps the file was corrupt so I deleted it and reloaded it with WMP10. Today I skipped a ways past from where it last rebooted and it played fine for about 20 minutes and then rebooted at the 4 hour 38 minute point.

I have practically worn out the skip button by repeatedly skipping up to the point I was at (wish there were bookmarks other than the one Audible one) before the reboot only to have it reboot again and it's getting really frustrating.

I don't seem to have problems playing other files but I don't have any longer than about 1.5 hours so am not sure if it is a problem with the length of the Audio Book file, a firmware issue, or a hardware issue.

I thought it may have been a corrupt file but I have been able to go to points where it rebooted and play it through those points but then the T-10 reboots somewhere else further into the Audio Book.

I still have time to take the T-10 back for an exchange or refund so if anyone has experience with this being a hardware defect let me know.

Should I try a format or downgrade the firmware? I hesitate to format (but will if I have to) because the license for the Audio Book says I can sync it one more time only. Has anyone had this problem and do you have a solution or work around?
Thanks in advance.

sounds like the file is corrupt or the T10 can't play files longer than 4hrs 38mins

You pretty much nailed it.

I contacted Iriver and Netlibrary tech support and this is what I found out.

Basically, the T10 does not play single files longer than about 90 minutes (or 4 hours in my case). Below is the reply from Iriver followed by the reply from Netlibrary.

From Iriver Support - "Files downloaded from NetLibrary are not guaranteed to work on the T series players. NetLibrary does not have a standardized format, and as such the files will not always play properly. Usually they do let out about 90 minutes into the file.

To insure your audio books play properly, purchase them from audible.com or overdrive.com. I happen to know that Audible.com is currently offering some free books for signing up for their service".
---------

From NetLibrary - "Here is some information we found during extensive testing: Due to the rapidly changing portable device market, we are re-evaluating our device list. Many portable devices on the market are designed primarily for use with music files. Some devices limit time tracking to a pre-defined period of time (with music in mind) and often eAudiobooks files may be longer than the pre-defined period in the device. In this case, the complete length of the file will not be shown in the device, additionally some functionality may suffer. Devices that support full time stamping do not limit the time tracking of a file in any way and will allow the full length of an eAudiobook file to display and retain full functionality. With this in mind, we will be updating this list of devices we have tested based on the following requirements".

Here is a recent review from an Amazon.com customer regarding the T10. I wish they had posted this before I bought mine. (I sent mine back today for a refund. Probably get the IAudio G3).

"Not for NetLibrary, but nice Device"

"I purchased this for the specific use of downloading NetLibrary content, but was dissappointed. It is a nice device, feels sturdy, has lots of bells and whistles like moving through directories, etc. Downloaded a NetLibrary book to try it out. Four hours into the first book, it buzzed and reset to zero. Since the fast-forward is rather slow, I just let it run on my desk for four hours to give it another shot. Four and 1/2 hours into the book this time, same problem. Called vendor - they don't support Net Library files. Said the files are too big. Told me to use Audible. If they had indicated this in their documentation or on their website, I could have saved myself some time and trouble."

I have the same problem listening to audio files. I subscribe to a WMA DRM lecture series and they are usually about 90 minutes long. Somewhere between 1:09 and 1:16 into the playback, the T30 buzzes and resets the file to zero or "auto-rewinds" or starts playing a different file - depending on the playback settings. So, despite what iriver told you, it will not play a 90 minute file either. I think that 60 minutes must be the limit. I have tried multiple variations of settings, firmware versions, reformatting, exchanging for a new T-30, holding my head to one side and whistling, etc, and nothing fixes this bug. I am hoping that iriver will perhaps modify the firmware so that at least I can get through 1:30 minutes of playback.... Meanwhile, I wasted $120 because the only reason I bought the T30 was to listen to these lectures. Sigh.
