Disappointed...
Well, now I'm just getting downright frustrated. Maybe I'll throw the thing against a brick wall and see what kind of bass tunes I'll get from that... or maybe I'll just sell the thing to those XP users. Stupid refurbished box should have indicated that it requires WinXP to function. I tried running the Firmware Updater V1.7 ... you know the one that's supposed to convert MTP to UMS and vice versa... Well, turns out that the updater first has to recognize the device to run - and if it doesn't recognize my T10 ???? So much for that.... IRiver - I'm very disappointed with you... I'll just have to borrow my wife's cheapee noname brand mp3 player (WHICH ACCEPTS UMS BY THE WAY!)

Can't you use somebody else's computer that's got XP and WMP10 installed just to connect for the first time and convert to UMS? It is annoying that they make you jump through hoops like this, but once it's converted to UMS you can use it on almost any system.

I'm sure you could take it to an internet cafe with XP machines and get it working. It should only take you a few minutes.

Thanx for all responses above... Will try your advice and bring the device to a friend's place to hook up to his XP machine... I guess all I need is to bring the factory CD (containing WMP10 - in case he doesn't have WMP) and the device (with USB cable) and the Firmware Updater v1.7 (on floppy)... Let me know if there's anything else required... Thanx.

Totally confused...
Well, I went to buddies place to convert my T10 to UMS mode using firmware updater v1.7 and his XP machine. After updating (Which required internet connection by the way - no option for manual), it prompted for device to be disconnected and then device would reset and update a few times. Upon disconnection, the T10 just went dead. After getting home, I reconnected it to my W2k system - nothing... still would not recognize the device. After attempting to re-install driver again I got message "The file 'secums.sys' on USB Mass Storage Disk is needed". !?!? So, I tried again installing driver, using an alternate driver which Windows suggested was available. This time it worked! (and this driver is quite dated - 1999!). OK - now to test the T10. All folders (Playlist, Voice, Record) were all there - in addition to a system file 'T10.sys' (a hidden file - 512 bytes long, 8192 bytes used). My question is CAN I DELETE T10.sys FILE SAFELY? This is totally strange to me - My wife's no name cheapee UMS Mp3 player has no such files on board and is completely empty ready to be loaded with Mp3 songs. Iriver - Why do you make things so complicated?!!! Can you not simply include a folder of drivers on your WMP10 cd for all XP, W2k, W98 users??? I guess you made too sweet of a deal with MR. G. from Microsoft....pretty well forcing users to own XP machines....PS: added 'Dara' folder to T10 and can now transfer .BMP files to it.

In order to convert to UMS you have to update the firmware twice. Follow these instructions on your friends computer http://www.iriver.com/html/support/f...ew.asp?idx=387
The first time you will not get the option to switch to UMS. You will the second time you run it. |

Thanx for Info above. However, after disconnecting device it went dead... it did NOT start to automatically update (last step) as the instructions so clearly state. Somehow I got the player working after selecting UPGRADE FIRMWARE from the player itself after it was disconnected. Anyhow its working now. It would be nice however if Iriver went about the conversion process in a more relaxing way filled with less tension... especially for those of us without XP. Oh yes... I believe that the T10.sys file is necessary on a UMS device, since I found out that my cheapee mp3 player has a file as well (SETTINGS.DAT). Unfortunately it was hidden on my other computer until I unselected 'hide hidden operating files'. ...
