mtp-> ums update for win98?

hello to everbody.
i am new to this forum and to english-speaking forums in general so i apologize for my english in advance.

i read the faq and tried the search on this forum but didnt find a solution so far.

i bought an iriver t10 today (firmware V. 1.23P, EU-edition) and i knew about the mtp/ums problem before, but i refuse to install winXp and winmp10. my computer is still running on win98SE.
i know about the mtp->ums-updater on iriver, just downloaded and installed it and hoped that this would by-pass my problem.
but it didnt, cause my computer wanted an usb-driver to recognize my t10. i dont have any and there are no possibilities to download it from iriver so i can´t proceed the transformation.

my questions:
1. must i pack my player, my winmp10-cd and visit somebody with winXP to transform my mtp- to an ums-player?
2. shall i update the firmware afterwards? V1.23 sounds old...

newsflash:
i tried on a winXP-computer now.
but another problem came up: the original firmware-update-program from iriver (that shall iclude the new firmware and the possibilty to switch from ums to mtp and vice verse)
1. doesnt show the same as the screenshots do. i have definitely no mtp <-> ums tranform-button.
2. i cannot even update the firmware from v .23 to 1.70.
the message "upload not successfull" appears, even i got the notice that the "firmware-download was completed"

thanks, but i tried every version now, i guess.
same result: the update is downloaded (the green bar works at least), then it stops and tells me, the file cannot be transferred to the player and so the player´s question, if i want to update the fw, has no result ("no file") an i am still happy with my v. 1.23. and: no mtp <-> ums-button on this version neither.
i really wonder, if i am to stupid to do a simple upgrade.

sorry to quote myself: but what i did not do: to try on another computer. the usb-port 2 was damaged with all those strange consequences.
now i am proud user of ums-T10 on windows 98.
