Hi,
I just bought a T30 (1GB) and have a windows 2000 professional OS. My machine can not find USB driver for T30. I tried installing USB2.0 drivers as well. I can not update T30 firmware as even I can not connect to my machine at all. Appreciate all your help. Thanks |

What rot. Eimius has not read anything on the subject past the box his T30 came in. This is the flimsyest of research as the box only describes the device at the time it was packaged and digital devices these days often get updates. Boxes hold out of date information. Such low research levels also underestimate the ability of the community to do things the manufacturer did not consider, as well as the eventual ability of Microsoft to provide updates for older OSs. Each of these elements has played a part in allowing users to have a T30 and still use a proper OS like Win2K or Linux. It works fine with Win2K. Mine does.
You have to convert your player from MTP to UMS. Either download the latest iriver flash updater (many threads here cover this) and use a friends WinXP box to do the job, or follow my Win2K to UMS thread (a little more involved for the non-amature, but doesn't require a mate with WinXP). My Win2K method is a little old now. You can use the US/GB UMS firmware now released by iriver. No hybrid firmware is necessary. The method for getting Win2K to transfer the flash file is the same, however. That is, unless the new iriver updater works with the Win2K MTP drivers from Microsoft (the MTP drivers are flakey and are usually used to update to UMS, not to use MTP all the time) but no-one has tried and has reported back. Can't hurt to try though. The UMS drivers are for Win98, Win98SE & WinME. Not Win2K or WinXP, which both support UMS devices natively. Last edited by BongMong : June 24th, 2006 at 09:35 PM. |

MTP to UMS
Cant find your mentioned method without using XP. I have an T30 and Win2k and not able to switch the device as a MTP one. How can I do that as a precondition to load up new firmware...?

Bong - I have a new T-30 and have followed your advice to the extent that I could, since you provided no links and assumed everyone knew where the referenced threads were. I can't find them.
My Win2K machine will not recognize the player, the updater which I downloaded from iRiver doesn't even show my device and therefore won't update or connect it to my computer in any way. If there's another thread (or website anywhere) that gives simple concise instructions on how to mate the T-30 with a Win2K machine, I'd sure like to have a link to it. |

Here's the whole thread: T30, new firmware and Windows 2000 But really, the easiest thing is to hook up to an XP machine. |

Paul,
I assume you have installed the MTP system from Microsoft? It can be done by following this thread: U10 and W2k You will then need to put the correct UMS firmware on the player. No hybrid needed anymore. Just the 1.71 UMS firmware for your type of player (pure or not). use the instructions from my thread to transfer the firmware file. If it's a bit of a pain to use the cocktail of packages to transfer, you can always borrow a friends XP machine. I believe the updater may not convert players until they have been upgraded to the latest firmware, but I could be wrong. It may not work even then on a 2K machine to an MTP device going to UMS, but it should go the other way. |

Haven't you been perusing the posts? I can't believe you haven't seen my posts on this very subject! You have to first upgrade on an XP unit to the latest version of MTP firmware. Then you can use the updater and convert to UMS (on an XP machine). Your Win 2000 computer will then see it as an UMS device. Make sure that you check the windows explorer browser in XP and see if XP sees it as a UMS device. You may have to use the updater twice. Read this post: How I finally converted the T30 to UMS! This might also be helpful as it indicates what I originally did: T30 Firmware question for Bongmong and all firmware experts I don't know what region of the world you're in, but contact customer support to find out what file you need to upgrade your MTP firmware to 1.71 first. That will save you alot of time. This whole business of Iriver venturing into MTP was ridiculous. WMP is bloated, resource heavy, and slow to move files over to the T30. |

I have done it, personally. Just because you did it with XP doesn't mean it's the only way. You should read my posts on the very subject. |

Nothing I have done so far has triggered my Win2K (SP4) machine to recognize the device. I updated the firmware on an XP machine and did everything I was told to do, such as convert it to UMS. But my WMPv10 still can't access anything beyond noticing that a T30 is there when it's plugged into the USB and turned on. Likewise, when I try to add hardware, it again asks for drivers, which makes sense, but where would a driver be for this? I saw it work on the XP machine, but on the Win2K, it remains invisible.
I believe folks here who say the T-30 can mesh with other OS's, but iRiver sure is adamant they don't. Here's my recent exchange with them: Quote:
