MTP or UMS

Hi All,

I realized that a lot of discussion is happening abt MTP to UMS converstion.
Some want MTP..some UMS. Some have screwed up the player while doing this conversion.

I am wondering about the future of MTP and UMS before doing this conversion ...
I have a t10 MTP currently at 1.60. Not sure if I should really do this.
pros and cons..i have read.

The fact that the MTP to UMS firmware is not an official one and breaks the warranty is also a concern.

What if new firmwares are realsed for MTP and not for UMS (not likely).

Is it worth doing the conversion ?

Priyatham.

MTP ties you to WiMP 10. If that's your favorite then keep MTP.
UMS allows you to use a Mac or Linux machine, or Windows 2000 or Win98 without hassle. Basically UMS gives you everything that MTP does, plus more.

I read that MTP -> UMS could be OK but if not, UMS -> MTP seems to be "dangerous"

UMS to MTP is not possible as of now. Not sure if there is any latest development in that area...

There aren't nearly as many guinea pigs willing to risk their players testing UMS to MTP conversion. Can't imagine why

UMS<->MTP is now officially supported by iRiver both ways (see my other post on the subject, of the front page of this site). No more issue. No more excuse for scabs to stick with MTP to suck up to Microsoft.

Though it's posted on their website as being "supported", it doesn't seem that their Support Staff knows anything about it. Still.....

Even worse, there are more questions then ever from users. <sarcasm>Now, that's what I call a roll out</sarcasm>... nice going iRiver.

UMS...I do not like to be holden to any software to make it work. Drag and Drop all the way. The reason I didn't buy iPod is Itunes. (and AAC)
(
I store all kinds of stuff other then music on my H120. I mean can I really listen to 3000 songs?

I bought my H120 four years ago and its going strong.

Yes, still recognized and will still transfer music by artist and album. However, WMP 10 will not transfer playlists anymore once a player is converted to UMS.

...

About that UMS – MTP drag and drop thing.
I have a T10 1Gb - MTP 1.7P US… and can drag and drop every thing on my player,
pics, audio, video…even can copy music from it to other computers (as long as they all have mp10)…
I don’t even use mp10 to fill it up.
Unless you are a linux\mac\or older windows user…u really don’t need any conversions

That’s my opinion any way

And how about renaming files ? moving files ? Having all music files (mp3 & ogg) in the same directory ? Accessing it from whatever computer/operating system you can find ?
MTP just sucks, that's all.

i had WMP11 already installed on my computer when i bought my T20. here's the impressions:
  • the player worked but i couldn't access it via Explorer at all.
  • WMP11 like to put all albums in one folder without subfolders, resulting with a mess of mp3s.
  • after sync to the player via WMP11, next sync just wouldn't be possible. i could add to playlist but sync option was disabled in WMP until i format the player. then WMP11 enables the sync option.
  • on computer at work with WMP10 there was no problems.
so after switching to UMS, everything became just a question of copy/paste to player, no matter what pc configuration, which version of WMP is installed etc. simple as that. no way i would go to MTS again.

The 1.23 firmware was known to have this problem. It was fixed in 1.71 MTP.

Didn't answer the poll because for my preference, it depends.

For music: MTP
For podcasts/audiobooks: UMS

I originally flashed to UMS but changed back to MTP to have working playlists for music. Drag and drop is good for music, and necessary for anyone using Linux, MAC, or still using Win 98 or 2000. But if using XP anyway, drag and drop still works on MTP but I don't necessarily mind using a program to sync music playlists. After all, I spend far more time listening to music on the player than connected to USB transferring files, so putting up with the slight inconvience of syncing is no big deal. But non-working playlists was a big deal. I don't use DRM music so never had any issues with files not transferring properly, and either WMP or Media Monkey are very easy to use. Set up a snyc and just walk away, come back and it's complete with no problems. <shrug>

If T10 recognized standard playlist formats then would have left it as UMS but it uses a proprietary .pla playlist format. Don't have time to create new playlists each USB connect, and don't want to waste drive space by creating a bunch of playlist folders with individual songs in each just to be able to drag and drop those pre-created folders each time.

But for podcasts and audiobooks I use UMS. My podcast aggregator downloads and automatically creates separate folders for podcasts, so instead of importing those into any media program I just drag the already-created folders over via UMS. (If you use iPodder just set it to "no player" under preferences and it won't import into your media program.) Audiobooks are in formats that make drap and drop far easier too. The files for podcasts and audiobooks are bigger than music files, so require a lot less manipulation.

MTP is not an option as I do not have windows on my computer. The T20 is UMS by default in sweden where I bought mine so I have not converted it.

Thumbs down Both Suck

I have a T10 1g with FM tuner... cannot get it to work on a W2K machine. I have tried all the different methods on this site, and none have worked. How in the heck do you get this T10 to be recognized on a W2K machine? This is nuts... Iriver sucks... buy something else... gonna toss this thing in the trash.

I have a us T10 512MB with radio. I am desperate to use my player as UMS because I really don't want to be stuck using WMP10.

I have seen many links to the website www.ums-mpt.net to allow the conversion of US version to UMS. Unfortunately, this site has been down ever since I have been trying to access it. Does anyone have the required files and instructions. I will be forever grateful.

BTW, has iriver played a hand in shutting the mtp-ums site down?

Try downloading the following:
http://www.iriverplus.com/tools/UMS/..._ENG_UM_OK.ZIP

Extract the hex file from the zip and then transfer it to the root of your T10.

WANRING: The next firmware update they do will change this link. Don't count on this remaining active forever.

@cadiehl
In all your posts (which I just read for the first time) you never mentioned if you were running SP4. IIRC W2K did not add support for USB 2.0 until SP4. If that isn't the problem, are you running anything that installs daemon tools on it? Specifically the sptd.sys driver can cause this type of problem (well, older versions did - they fixed it a little bit ago.)

I am assuming that the UMS update was successful for you since you are still able to use your XP based machine. If this is not the case let me know.

I am running SP4. I will have daemon tools on that machine. I will check that situation out when I get home. On my XP machine, it will not let me drag and drop anything into the root of the T10. It only let me put it a folder of the T10..... why, I do not know. I do not know if the UMS update has been successful or not. My XP Pro has always allowed me to drag and drop to the T10 whether MTP or UMS, but when to T10 starts, it says T10 MTP regardless of what method I have tried to do the MTP to UMS conversion. Everytime I do a FW upgrade, it does it's thing then shuts off... then when I turn it back on, it has the same FW screen as if it did not finish. This has been extremely frustrating. It is not my T10... it is my daughters... I do not want it to work on my XP... it needs to work on her W2K Pro... I may just upgrade her machine to an XP Pro and be done with it... not very impressed with Iriver though.... thank you very much for responding. Any more ideas based on what I have said in this post?
Thanks,
CD
