I have IFP 799, Should I get the T10??
HI guys,
I have not posted here for quite some time, but I do have a question please. I have owned an IFP 799 for about year now. I have never had a bit of a problem with it. I have very much enjoyed it! I did pick up a T10 a couple of days ago with the thought of selling the 799. I am not so sure now if that is what I want to do. I have not upgraded the firmware to the newest version and so I don't know what the new SRS ver 2.0 sounds like. The new T10 sounds pretty good now, but it will not play nearly as loud as the 799. I have read here about if you turn the EQ down to flat, the sound will go louder, which I have verified, but that kinda defeats the EQ doesn't it? Granted, I don't normally (hardly ever at all) listen to the player at full on, but it does seem like a bug. What would you all recommend? Should I just keep the 799 and return the T10. By the way, I use this player often while riding my motocycle. Thanks for your input. Ron |

Keep the 799. It's an easy decision. The T10 is not a compelling upgrade, esp if you'll wish for more volume later.

if i was you i will keep both of them, why not, espeacially if you in high tech toys kind of guy then keep them all...myself i have 3 mp3 players but feels never have enough yet, and i love my T10 MTP to UMS best mp3 player i have so far..also have creative muvo N200 and sandisk but T10 is always my favourite

if i had the T10 and the iFP-799 i would keep the 799...because:
1. Firmware upgrades (esp to UMS) are possible without any Problems 2. if you use the US Firmware on it, the player sounds really louder (comparing to EU Firmware) 3. if you only listen to music, why do you need a color screen? T10 looks nice, but i think, you don't look at photos while riding your motocycle and when its not so loud...i think you know what i mean

Don't forget: There's an in-progress Rockbox port for the iFP-7xz series. It's *very* early right now, but far enough along that I think there's a reasonable change it'll get to a working point with time. Right now, it can *sorta* play WAV audio. Which is, y'know, a lot further along than "Y'know, it'd be neat to have Rockbox on an iFP-7xx"
So while that's not a short term reason to get it (as it's useless right now) in the long term it may lead to the iFP-799 being a rather more impressive device. |

Oh, right, I keep thinking it's omnipresent since it's discussed incredibly heavily on the H100 and H300 boards.
Rockbox is an alternative open-source firmware. Basically, if they do get it working, it'd be a pretty serious upgrade. New recording features, new playback formats supported, etc, etc, etc. At least, that's what it's done for the H100 and H300 series so far. You can see what sort of things it can do at rockbox.org, but it could be as much as a year or more before it's done for iFP-7xx (or it could just be a couple months. It really depends on how much gets done, or if the person working on it has moved on to other things, or gotten busy.) |

Thanks Llorean, I will check it out. I think though that it won't matter a lot to me. I just want to keep the one that sounds the best. I did get the new firmware installed and the newer SRS 2.0 sounds pretty good. One thing I have noticed is that at max volume on the 799, I do hear distortion while on max volume on the T10 I do not. I do know that is partly because the 799 is playing louder, but if I turn it down to where the distortion stops, are you somewhere close to where the T10 is on high? Just wondering.
Thanks, Ron |

Well, that's something that you can easily verify yourself...
Now, I think I'd go for the 799 too, in fact the only reason I considered the T30 (once upon a time) was because the 799 cost about 50 euros more, otherwise it really would have been an easy decision for me... The distortion could either be because of the ear/headphones or simply because that after some point the amp gets louder by maxing all the EQ amplifications it has (at least that's how most Sony Hi-Fis max their volumes, they give all the extra bass they have...). Either way, I would suggest making a decision based on: - If either one gets as loud as you want. - At the volume you feel most comfortable with which one do YOU think has the best sound. - Which has the best battery life. Finally, let me remind you that you already paid for the 799 and if you have used it for a year now it must have proven to be a good buy. Personally I would suggest get the most out of the device that you already have and once it reaches the end of its' existence then look for a replacement... Whichever you choose, I hope it will satisfy you and give you many (more?) hours of happy listenings... CheerS!
