MTP-UMS under Win2K - Guide
OK folks, the MTP-UMS solution is found. Woo Hoo! But what if you have Win2K? No doubt you will have told all your mates to dump Windows Disney Edition (WinXP) a long time ago, and after seeing your 2K setup they all threw their copies of XP away right? So what now? How to flash this thing? Here's the solution, without having to install Linux just to transfer one file.
These notes assume you have a PURE (no fm radio) DAP. If not, the process can be modified accordingly. 1 ) Make sure your Win2K system has been set up to transfer files to the MTP device, this process is well documented on this forum. 2 ) Download the correct MTP-UMS zip file from http://www.mtp-ums.net/ and extract the file. Rename it Txx_MPURE.HEX (xx for the player number, like T30_MPURE.HEX for mine). 3 ) Download the correct official 1.60 UMS firmware from http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/iriverupdate/ and extract the Txx_PURE.HEX file from that. The correct file to download for mine was T30 PURE_EST_UM_NO. Remember, your player will be EST (Australian) once converted. 4 ) Put the MPURE and PURE .HEX files together somewhere. Now, download the latest QMP beta from here: http://www.quinnware.com/ and install it. Also, download and install Mediamonkey. Mediamonkey won't load a hex file to it's playlist but it will upload files. QMP will load a hex file but it won't upload. It can, however, transfer files to the Mediamonkey playlist which can then be uploaded via Mediamonkey. 5 ) Run Mediamonkey once. Then close it. This sets up it's initial blank playlist for QMP to find. 6 ) Run QMP. Get it to add Txx_MPURE.HEX to it's playlist. Right Click in it in the play list and 'send' the file to Mediamonkey. This is because I can't get QMP to flash to a T30 in MTP. You may have better luck. 7 ) Run Mediamonkey with the DAP connected. HAVE A STRONG NEW BATTERY! 8 ) the MPURE HEX file should be in the play list. Change the preferences to send the portable files to the path \<Filename>. 9 ) Highlight the .HEX file in the play list. Use the toolbar icon to send the file to the player. If this fails (Win2K MTP transfers work most of the time but can fail harmlessly sometimes, unlike UMS) then wait for your player to say 'USB Connect' rather than 'Transfer' before disconnecting and trying again. Even if it works, you must do the same thing but instead of trying again it will reboot and flash itself. 10 ) When done, format the player from the advanced menu option on the DAP. 11 ) You should now be able to connect the player as a UMS device. Drop the official firmware into the root, and disconnect. Remember to use the proper USB device disconnect procedure. You have a UMS device now and it needs be properly 'disconnected' from the system before unplugging. 12 ) Once flashed again, format from the advanced menu. You might want to choose the 'Reset to defaults' option as well to be sure. Yay! It's done. Just make sure you ALWAYS use the correct Windows disconnect procedure after transfering files from now on. Also: Never transfer files with a low battery! It will rudely disconnect when they run out and may turn your player into a brick. Always use a freshly charged battery or keep some alkaline batteries on the side for transfer purposes alone, switching to your NiMH batteries for use. I have destroyed one player by not doing this... You can now have the satisfaction of knowing that there is still nothing on earth that you need to upgrade to WinDE for. Yay Win2k! I added a link to this in the big summary thread.

Hello there,
I have bought an iriver T30 (EU/MTP version) today, just to find out it was not supported by win2k. As many others here I'm not very keen on switching to WinXP, i'd rather return the player to the store. Shorty after I found this site and browsed all the threads. Marvellous job everyone! Nevertheless, I came up with a problem. I managed to get Monkey's Audio to recognize the T30 via the WMP9 + MTP + Khron's .inf method. BUT, I seem to not be able to transfer the T30_MPURE.EXE to my player. I get something transfered, some small file which just reads '.HEX' in the players browser, and the player does NOT automagically upgrade the firmware... I tried multiple times, always with the same result. i also formatted, deleted the apparently broken .hex file but to no conclusion. Can somebody help me there? or should i go and return the thing to the store? Thanks in advance, -jonas |

You haven't read my guide properly.
1) What on earth are you transfering an executable for? I never suggested you do that. 2) Have you renamed the HEX file as I instructed? 3) Have you put it into the root directory as I instructed \<Filename> ? 4) Have you checked the CRC on the downloaded firmware? 5) Are you using QMP to transfer the HEX file to MonkeyAudio's playlist? Please, re-read my instructions. Sorry to be so blunt, but you seem to be doing some odd stuff that is not in my instructions. DO NOT MESS WITH EXEs. Your iRiver cannot run PC code. And for God's sake do not try renaming an EXE to a HEX file and then transfering it. You'd be asking for a bricking, chum. |

Oh my, what a bad typo! Naturally i didn't try to transfer an .EXE, i was refering to the .HEX file.
I was in a hurry and had to leave home for a while so I thought I would just write a quick post and see if someone answers So much for number 1). For the other questions: yes, yes, yes and yes. Anyway, I was writing because I did precisely what you instructed, and that it doesn't work is precisely what confuses me. I might add that I'm located in Germany, but my player should just be like the other EU versions I guess. On shutdown the player says 'T-30MTP1G/EU', on the back is a sticker reading 'T30MX 1G'. Further clarification: I tried about ten times transfering the .hex file to the player. Each time I get one of two results: Either the transfer is way too fast imho (about 1 second), or the transfer stops in the middle. As I posted before the player does not upgrade the firmware after disconnection from the pc, and when I browse the player I find a .hex file which does not have a name, its just showing a file called '.HEX'. EDIT: I found another mistake in my first post: I didn't use Monkey's Audio but, as suggested by you, Mediamonkey. Monkey's Audio is for something different. Could have thought about it earlier, but no, stupid me. I tried transfering an .mp3 file now, with the same result. I get a no-name file with just the extension '.mp3' displaying. the player reports zero music files found on startup. so the transfer problem seems to be somewhere between monkeymedia and the usb cable. I tried changing usb cables: no success. tried changing usb ports: no success. will try updating usb drivers next.

alright, copying mp3s via WMP9 works fine. just not via mediamonkey it seems.
EDIT: Arrgh! No, it doesn't. I got the filename alright the first time, was just luck I guess. On the second try WMP9 also stopped the transfer somewhere in the middle of the file. Last edited by f00 : March 1st, 2006 at 07:12 PM. |

Ahh. I see. Crikey, you did scare me with that EXE lark!
Hmm. Sounds like either: 1) Hardware fault with PC, or T30. Make sure you have a fresh battery and that you don't have any other USB devices plugged in. Go direct to the PC's port, no hub. 2) Bad Win2K MTP driver setup. Check and check again. 3) Bad Win2K installation. Reinstall (ouch!)? 4) Bad format on T30. Reformat. The process outlined certainly does work. I garuntee it. If you have to, try a friends PC with either my method on 2K or the standard method on XP or the Linux method. If it works, it's your home setup. If it doesn't, take the T30 back to the shop. |

Hmm indeed!
1) I don't want to exclude a hardware error, though i find it very much unlikely. I tried three different sets of fresh, non-rechargeable batteries. I also reformatted the player a couple of times already. 2) I triple-checked the MTP drivers, uninstalled them, erased every trace of them from the registry, reinstalled them to no avail. And did the whole thing over again. Same problems as before. 3) You can never be too careful when it comes to Windows, even 2k, but I'm pretty sure everything is functioning properly. I use Win2k Pro SP4 with proper patches (post-sp4 patch rollup), and I keep doing regular maintenance on my system. I haven't done a complete Win2k reinstall for quite some time, and I'm not very keen on it. Especially regarding the lots of different applications I have installed for many different purposes. Which might actually be exactly the problem. I have a feeling that there might be some kind of cross-incompatibility with other software here, which is hard to track down. Now, maybe I have a problem with Mediamonkey? What leads me to that conclusion is the fact that MM is not able to write proper filenames on the T30. I can copy .mp3 files alright with WMP9 (up to the point where the connection freezes, just like Taucher writes in this thread). The files copied with WMP9 have proper filenames+filetype extensions. BUT if I copy any kind of file with MM, I just get unusable files on my T30 (the size roughly equals the filesize on my PC's HDD), named '.MP3', '.TXT', and most annoying, '.HEX'. Maybe there is some other software capable of sending data files to the player like Mediamonkey? I haven't found any yet, but maybe there is? I might try at some friends PC, but I'm beginning to think if the fuss is worth it. I might as well get another player from a different company. But somehow I can't let go off this problem, and I want to find a solution by all means. So, I don't expect you to solve this for me magically, and I'm really thankful for your responses. Thanks for that. I will try around a little more and maybe return the player to the store next week. |

Yay! It worked! I'm pretty excited now, but I'll try to explain briefly how I did it:
I was playing around with QMP ( Development Version B108 ) and thought 'Damn! Why can't I just transfer the .hex file with this proggy?'. I opened the playlists and devices window, dragged the 'T30_MPURE.HEX' file onto the files queued for transfer thingie, I tried a couple of times, but then it somehow worked, and the transfer button showed up. I pressed and voila!, I had the file on my T30. I was quite stunned, disconnected and got the 'Firmware Upgrade' message. Player went off, I restarted, formatted and checked: It worked! AU_HK, version 1.60P. Last edited by f00 : March 2nd, 2006 at 12:33 PM. |

The Win2K MTP link is not very stable. Looks like you got QMP to transfer, I couldn't. I could Get Media Monkey to transfer, you couldn't. UMS is necessary. Well done.
Now, consider following the rest of my instructions and install the proper firmware to replace the hybrid you have just transfered. You don't want any trace of the MTP firmware on there. You don't want a delayed reaction brick. |

Well, computers are mysterious sometimes
I installed the proper firmware now, everything works as advertised I really like the player, it would really have been a waste if I couldn't have used it! No need to worry now Anyways, a big thank you to you and to all the others who contributed to this matter. I'll definitely check back here and visit the boards! But now I'm off to trying my T30 |

Consider downloading iriver plus 2 (threads are available on where to download this). It will tell you when you have a new UMS bios update available and update it. It will also allow you to make play lists and reorder files. It comes with UMS versions of the T30 like WMP10 comes with MTP versions.

I tried the iriver plus 2 proggy today, but except for its reordering folders and one-click disconnect abilities it does nothing for me... a little disappointing I think.
On top of that, unlike Mediamonkey for example, iriver plus 2 is not able to display japanese characters at all - something which I really need because I listen to japanese music a lot. Another weird thing I just noticed: After installing the proper 1.60 firmware, the delete file function seems to have disappeared... noticed anything similar? |

Things have moved on a bit now. You can download a proper UMS firmware from here: http://nyaochi.sakura.ne.jp/iriverupdate/
I believe, from the threads on this forum, that the latest UMS firmwares are suitable for flashing to MTP players. If not, try the UMS/MTP conversion firmware updater that iriver provide after installing the 2K MTP drivers as detailed in my older guide. |
