S10 problem - one-sided sound + USB issue
Hi - a bit of a crisis with my S10 (which to date has been working perfectly). In the last week a problem has developed whereby sound is only coming through one channel (right). I've tested this using a few pairs of headphones as well as line-to-line cables, but the problem persists.
As well as that the device is not being properly recognised as a USB when I plug it into my PC. I have looked after my device quite well since buying it, but admit to often sticking it in my small jeans pocket on occasion which may well have caused some undue pressure/stress on the device. It seems the problem has something to do with the headphone jack. I've tried to blow in to it to clear out any debris which might be in there, but to no avail. I only bought the player in April so naturally you'd think: warranty. But...the eBay buyer I bought the item off (http://myworld.ebay.com/digigood/) appears to no longer be a registered user. Grrrreat. Any suggestions? |

Try reformatting it. I've had a few small problems with my iriver s10 as well, and reformatting has always fixed it. I'm assuming you know what this means and how to do it...
on firmware v 1.05KR, it's under SETTINGS>>Advanced>> Format Device Just in case you don't know, this will delete any media you have on it.

Cheers.
Tried but still doesn't work Perhaps I'll opt for a cheaper player which I can bash about a bit more |

Well then
You might be able to send it back to iriver to fix it if it's still under warranty. Or you can try bringing it somewhere to get fixed. Sounds like you just need to change the headphone jack.
Best of luck

This JUST happened to mine as well. I'm not sure how. It's usually just sitting in a special pocket in my purse. I hadn't used it for a week and noticed it yesterday. As far as I can tell the USB functions fine, but I'm not getting sound out of both ears- it's not the head phones. I can jiggle the jack around and i can get sound out of both ears.
What did you end up doing? I bought mine on ebay 7 months ago, but the warranty may still be available. Let me know! I'm very sad and don't want to buy another one. |

For clarification, this is an internal connection issue.
When you wiggle the headphone jack back and forth the solder will eventually crack. iRiver sent me a new one no problem. You just have to be careful not to put pressure on the S10 when it's plugged in. (mine was plugged in, and one of my stupid room mates put his foot on it!! <_< this is when the problems started happening) I am still wondering if they will resolve this issue eventually??? (with a new pcb revision or something) If I have time I will take pictures of the broken solder, I tried to have it re soldered by a professional and they said it is not fixable. Yea, I knew this was the case because this happened to my PMP140 before it was stolen. I was able to take it apart and find a friend with a soldering iron and we got it fixed. I figured it'd be a harder for the tiny S10. I can't find any instructions for taking it apart. I just found my warranty and since I bought it slightly used (for like a month or 2), the warranty is no longer valid. I really don't want to buy another mp3 player since i've only had it for 6-7 months. But it's looking like I don't have any other option (unless I can prove this professional solderer wrong)

This is what they do all day long for their job... I really didn't want to doubt them, but I guess anything with a pcb and solder is fixable if you try hard enough. |
