Why wont my mp3 files show up on the player?!

Hey there, I need some help here.

I've ripped a lot of my cd collection, maybe 100 cds, using Winamp 5.3. It's tagged all the songs etc and put them in folders. When I copy over to the player, the folder shows..but there are no songs inside. This is the same with all the cds I have ripped. Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how I can fix this?

Thanks

Are your folders at root level? Do they have the proper extension?

Can you see the files using windows explorer?
If so, maybe post a screen shot (include file extensions if possilbe) and we may be able to help.

Hey again guys. Okay, to put on my files I open the ihp-140 disk in explorer view and drag the folders in.

I ripped them in winamp..and they are Winamp Media Files... as you can see form the screenshot.

However, when I turn on the player, all I see is the folder...but no songs.

Your files don't have the extensions on them (.mp3)
Go into Tools > Folder Options > View and make sure you don't have "Hide extensions of files" checked off. (in Windows Explorer)

Awwww man. The extentions are .m4a . That's mp4..right? I'm an idiot. I just noticed that winamp is setup to rip the cds that way...and I've done over 100. Man! Is there any easy to convert these all into mp3? I can't believe I've been so stupid!

Somebody else will have to help you with that. Don't know much about .m4a
But if you do transcode (m4a to mp3 or wma or ogg), your files will lose quality.

you can use a codec converter i.e. dbpoweramp (freeware, google to find) to convert the files to WVA and then re-code to mp3 BUT the playback quality will degrade somewhat.

Try a few and see if you can live with this. If it were me I'd re rip but that is up to you.

Glad we could help.
BTW it looks like some of your file names will be over the 52 character limit (that includes the file extension) if they are, the player may have problems (I'm not sure if this is DB mode only or not)
I had to rename "it's a long way to the top (if you wanna rock'n'roll)" to "it's a long way to the top..." for it to work on the player.
There are several tools which will help.

That problem appears only in the DB mode. If you are using Folder Tree you have nothing to worry about filenames.

I wouldn't convert your files to mp3, the quality would be just horrible. Reripping to mp3 would be your best bet.

all the music about 1,500 songs so far have gone directly to the album section and now all of a sudden there showing up in the file folder rather than the album section, i even tried deleted a few albums in the album section and putting them back on and they went to the file section, it's just a pain in the ass to scroll through all the files in that section, forgive me if these are all obvious questions i'm just learning how to use this thing

Colin-

Welcome to Mistic River. Please take a few minutes to look around here. One of the things that you'll notice that there are different forums for different players. You posted your question in the forum for H100-series players, not H300-series players. You also posted it in a thread that has nothing to do with what your question is about.

To answer your question (or at least what I think your question is, because it is not very clearly written), it sounds like you need to rebuild your database. If you're using the database mode (which is what displays by artist, genre or album), you need to update the database every time you put new songs on the player. Your manual explains how to do this.

Your manual will also explain how to fix the issue with the time display for your songs. (Hint: look for the menu option for "Time").
