Question Where to start??

G'Day All,

Greetings and best wishes.

I just purchased an iHP-120 from the iRiver store so that I can listen to my .OGG and MP3 files and also to record from the FM Tuner.

Based on what I have gathered so far, it appears that I should do firmware updates and maybe other stuff so as to get optimum use of the iHP-120. Also, what is Rockbox and why do I need it?
In addition, my MP3s are on a Windows box and the OGGs are on a Linux box, should I expect any problems/conflicts connecting to the different OSs via USB?

I am hoping that someone can send me the steps I need to follow to get up to speed.

Thanks...Cheers

Umm, Rockbox is at Rockbox.org.

Do read the general FAQ, etc. information there and download the manual first, which has installation instructions.

Good pick up.

I have a H120, but couldn't resist getting another one at this price. It's a true calssic DAP, that was way ahead of it's time.

I think the only thing that kept that player from really taking off was the joystick. While it doesn't bother me at all, I just don't think it brought enough "joy" to the masses. Centainly not like the infamous click wheel.

Welcome.

Rockbox is a replacement firmware for the H1xx series and other players, Rockbox gets rid of many annoyances which the original firmware has and improves on the original firmware in many aspects. if you install rockbox you can dual boot with the original firmware, if you like rockbox you can make it your sole firmware by flashing with rockbox and removing irivers firmware entirely.

There is a dedicated rockbox forum here at mistic, and rockbox has its own site,

Rockbox - Open Source Jukebox Firmware

Browse around, they support many players, have comprehensive manuals for their replacement firmware,

the link below is a good place to start, why rockbox ?, all the info is there.

DocsIndex < Main < TWiki

Connecting your H1xx to any OS is not a problem. and its drag and drop.

for me the main advantages of rockbox are,
Gapless playback of mp3-music (if encoded with LAME).
Playback volume normalising of music with Raplay Gain.
Full use of screen width for file browsing.
Create Playlists on the go, playlist catalog feature.
Bookmarking feature.
deleting and moving of files a breeze with rockbox

G'Day All,
Yesterday I updated the firmware to Rockbox. It worked out quite well. I am pleased. Thanks.

QUESTION:
When I copy my audio/music files the the iHP-120, is it necessary to create folders and place the files in each according to my preference or will it do an automatic index, etc, etc and display them accordingly?

Thanks again

There are two methods available to you for browsing your music within rockbox.

1). Filetree
This is like browsing your folders/albums in windows explorer, create a master directory called "Music" on your player, (dont create this directory in .rockbox ), then drag and drop your music to your player, with whater file structure you want e.g.

MUSIC / Album - Artist

2). Database method.
When you initiate database scan, rockbox will scan the metadata (info in your tags) and then list the music as per ,

Album
Artist
Style
Type
Year

etc....

Please read the manual on how to customise the database to your liking.
