A company like iriver who's warranty policy is basically "product replacement" whenever there is an issue has to keep a percentage of new units around to deal with warranty claims. As they go through each year they are able to release some of these units to their distributors/suppliers, etc... Additionally, these units are actually the "iHP-120" version and not the H120 version, so they are probably getting rid of stock that was left when they were forced to make the switch to H120.

IF the general public knew more about the benefits of a DAP such as the H1xx and H3xx dAPs, sure, there would definitely be a bigger market for them. But alas, people are lazy. And SO lazy in fact, that they'd rather stick with proprietary software to manage their freekin "iLives" than be able to have total control over their wares. I guess though, ignorance is bliss.

I use the optical every day with a very excellent dac and since this is a hard drive to dac, I get some great sound from a tiny package. I have 5, 2 140's and 3, geez no, 4 120's. Going to keep them around for some time.

I live and breath the optical out to an external DAC as well. I also like having my entire music collection with me at all times. Everytime I see threads like this one, a little voice whispers in my head "Buy another one!". I even have 3 spare hard drives and two spare batteries (damn that shelf life on batteries!). Batteries in the future is what I worry about the most. At this point, I'm expecting that I'm H1xx monogamous for the long haul as there's nothing out there better on the market, or pending release that I'm aware of. |

I also have two H140's and am not concerned about battery and HDD replacement, as long as someone makes LI-Poly batteries with similar or smaller dimensions and voltage specifications, cut an splice the wires and you're good to go, don't let incompatible connectors deter you.
HDD unavailability is also a non event as Compact Flash works on these DAP's, if my HDD packs up I'll install a 64 gig compact flash card, soooooo....its a win win situation for the Hxxx series.

I am waiting for the 128gb hard drive, that would be sweet. Now is anyone have problems using the CF card? I have read of some using them fine and of one difficulty here where the firmware on the iRiver had to be flashed, eliminating the iRiver software and in a way I like to have both iRiver and Rock Box.
If you store your batteries at 60 percent charge and in the refrig they will last for years. I have some mercury 625 that are from 1989 for my older cameras and they still test new (well they are new but 20 years old).. Though I have to admit I have one in my Leica M2 meter that is older and stills works like new. But we can have mercury in our light bulbs now. Go figure. |

This is basically what I have done. I keep a new unopened spare in the fridge, assuming that it's charge after sitting on a shelf prior to sale is around 50%. I expect that doing this should result in batteries that will still perform at 80+% after 2-3 years of chilling.

Just saw this weekend 16GB flash thumbdrives available for just under $50. Seems to simple me that the time is ripe for larger flash drive memory DAPs--if I purchased my iHP-140 for just under $500 4 years ago, why couldn't I spend that same amount now for a DAP with 64GB in flash memory? (Although, actually, I'd likely wait for 128GB memory.)
