iHP140 problem - ATA error -11 and Check HDD

My friend's Rockbox enabled iHP140 has a problem similar to ones that have been mentioned before, but I haven't been able to fix it. (I have an H340 and I'm not used to the iHPs)

When I turn it on, I get a quick ATA error: -11 message (and something about USB) and then it goes to Bootloader USB mode.
The only way out is to reset, which starts to boot up the original firmware but then says "Check HDD Connection" before showing the USB Connected screen.
Then the only thing I can do is reset again, which turns it off.

While its on, I CAN connect it to a PC via USB and access the HDD. (*edit - this is only in the Rockbox mode - when its on the iRiver screen, the PC doesn't seem to recognise it).

I tried charging it up - it accepts the charge but the problem remains.

I took it apart and reseated the HDD - problem remains.

Any suggestions?
I don't know what version of Rockbox is on it. Would updating it help?

and here Fixed H320 Always connected prob This evidently works on the h1xx models as well (though I've never had the need to use it).

If it turns out to be a HDD that's going bad, at least it's an easy fix & also a good excuse to put a larger drive inside... hopefully it's not the daughter board issue (unless you're really good @ soldering)! Let us know...

I tried the USB cable shorting trick but that didn't do anything.

Pushing down on the mainboard (or sqeezing the iRiver logo when the unit is reassembled) changes the screen from Connected to Disconnected (when its running original firmware), but when I release, it says Check File System, then Check Used Space, then the regular screen flashes on for a moment, then it goes back to Connected.

As the owner isn't too fussed about it, I don't think I'll bother spending more time on it.

Thanks for the help though!

Is there anyone who knows a place to send out the unit for repair? Any known shops that are willing to do it? How about iRiver? Would they repair the unit? I have a h120 with the error -32 and check hdd problem...
