Satellite Radio portable device...

http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuot...8471775_newsml

This XM release is old news, but the article mentions the possible future merging of this type of device with an iPod. Screw iPod, but how cool would it be to have an XM satellite reciever in our H140's. Imagine that. Fresh, commercial free content with the ability to record it directly to your hard drive...and it's already porperly tagged.

A great concept to consider when you think of where digital music and satellite radio are going.

jason.

Is that like digital radio? I was looking at the Pure DAB 1000 personal digital radio with the idea of buying it as a replacement for my little Sony personal FM/AM radio but when I saw the size of it I was put off a bit......it's almost the size of my iHP120!!!

We already have DAB (digital audio broadcast) radio in the UK and there are now several portable models. One of these even has an MP3 player also. perhaps we will see more of these in the future.

I am pleased so far though with the radio on my ifp 890. I get some interference outdoors sometimes, but it is usually good enough to listen to when walking or using public transport.

i have been doing some research on portable dabs and in my opinion the one to go for is probably the Philips Da 1000. It has had good reviews and has a slimmer form factor than many DABs. None of them are ultra slim. If I get one, it will probably be the Philips. It has both DAB and FM. A downside though is it doesn't have the L band which can be used in continental Europe (most UK models don't).

The Phillips model certainly LOOKS nice though I heard the battery life isn't overly good. The Bush model looks quite good as well though the best reviews I read was for the Pure.

Robs,

I have a Pure Evoke and its brilliant. So i was initially looking for a Pure portable. I compared the form factor of the Pure portable with the Philips by holding them in each hand in a John Lewis store. The Philips seemed better to me in terms of portability/luggability. the Bush also looks a little chunky. They have a deal on the Ferguson at Dixons at the moment - half price, bringing it down to £80. The cheapest i've seen the Philips is about £118.

Yeah the Pure handheld was £149 in Dixons this afternoon.....for home use I was looking at the Pure Tempus 1 as it looked really good with the optical out socket and the sleep/alarm functions etc.....and cheap too at £99

Its bad news for all those Brits who buy a DAB radio and want to take it with them on holiday and lsten to it on the beach. British DAB is slightly different to European DAB it seems.

Band L is the band used in continental Europe. Band III is the one used in the UK.

Band III: DAB – frequency band 174–240 MHz
L-Band: DAB – frequency band 1452–1492 MHz
DAB-Mode I, II, III and IV: country specific transmission mode. For worldwide operation a receiver must support all 4 modes:
Mode I for Band III, Earth
Mode II for L-Band, Earth and satellite
Mode III for frequencies below 3 GHz, Earth and satellite
Mode IV for L-Band, Earth and satellite

Robs,

hve you seen this site?

http://www.wohnort.demon.co.uk/DAB/pocketdab.html

The Aria does both band III and band L - though its a funny shape. I haven't seen a review of it. There is a guy selling these on Ebay.
