I decided to do some (random) testing. Rather than change one thing at a time, and run tests on my battery life (which would take at least 13 hours for each test) I changed everything and ran one test.
The point of this was twofold. I wanted to know if my new battery was OK, after it arrived rather worse for wear and I wanted to know if I could do anything to improve my battery's life. So I copied an album encoded 192 bit mp3 to my player, then bypassed rockbox and booted into the original firmware. Set it playing that one album on repeat and after 10:15 the battery indicator still showed about 1/3 remaining. I aborted this test, as I now estimate I will get somewhere about 14 hours total. So to recap: Playing ogg vorbis files at Q6 in rockbox with a very busy WPS - nearly 9 hours playing time. Playing mp3 files at 192 bit with iRiver firmware 14 hours playing time. I rather like the sound I'm getting from the ogg vorbis encoding, and the theme I am using is nice to look at, so it's likely that I will have to endure (only) 8 or 9 hours between recharges. Not such a great burden.

(edit) It might be helpful if I actually answered the question... I got just short of 12 hours. (Like, about eleven hours 50 minutes or something). I wasn't timing exactly, but I was out for just over twelve hours, and it gave up about ten minutes' walk from home. I was browsing quite a bit between albums, and had it on shuffle for a while.
