iHP140 Battery running down

I have a iHP140 which is 2 years old. It started to only last for 5 hrs so I've changed the battery twice (once with an 2200mAh and second with an 1700mAh). The problem still exists? So why is it using so much power? Do big h/phones have any effect? Or is the player settings or is it time to clean it up? Would a reset help? Running 1.66e firmware. Any ideas as I really like the device.

By any chance do you let your battery run down all the way? That would have an adverse effect.

No, I don't let it run down. Could it be the battery meter - how do you recalibrate it?

Does it actually switch off after 5 hours, or does the battery meter just show that it's flat after 5 hours?

If you are using Rockbox you can change the battery capacity setting to make the meter more accurate...
1. Press the A-B button once
2. Scroll down to General Settings and select
3. Scroll down to System and select
4. Select the Battery option
5. Select Battery Capacity option
6. Choose the correct battery capacity and select

If you're not using Rockbox, then you should be! Not only is it far better than the iRiver firmware, my battery lasts longer when using RB. Check out www.rockbox.org and the RB forums here if you're not familiar with it.

Using the player at high volumes (e.g. with high impedance headphones) will flatten the battery more quickly, but it should still last more than 5 hours.
A reset will not help, although a drive defrag may help slightly as it would mean more efficient drive reading. Don't forget to back up any important data before you do so though.
