I use this player for my everyday commute to work. It takes about an hour to get to work so a total of 2 hours everyday listening to this thing.

The two main reasons I love it for is the remote cause it's in my bag and I never have to take it out and have full control. The other reason is the amazing battery life on it.

I also love it for all the other reasons the others have mentioned too.

I love the fact that iPod users are still jealous of what my iRiver H140 can do. When I loaded rockbox yonks ago, their jealousy got much worse, although I was (rather selfishly!) gutted to see that Rockbox have ported iPods too as it means my iPod mates can now get all the great things I have, but with nice colour screens too! Still, I'll probably be very glad of that if I eventually have to replace my player.

Luckily, most people I know with an iPod do not have a clue about rockbox anyway so I can gloat a little bit longer until I take pity and tell them about it...

What do I like the most....

The sound quality
The even better sound quality with my Grado SR60's
The even EVEN BETTER sound quality with my pa2v2 Headphone Amp!

Oh it's like being in the studio with Bob Dylan....

i love the sound quality and drag-n-drop capabilities. i like the fact that i can connect to any PC w/o software. also, i've just taken off my iskin for the first time since i got it over a year ago in order to clean my player, and the design is just beautiful! i like the contrast of black and chrome.

Firstly the appearence is what drew me to the H140. Then when i looked at the specs it blew me away. When i first looked at the price it was dearer than the H10 and as it was my girlfriend who was buying me a player i asked for the cheaper H10. Then when i found these boards i was pretty jealous and knew i had to get one.

I like having the radio option for sports on the move, never really used the recording function as of yet but its something i might use soon. Sound quality is excellent.

Curiosity got the better of me and i had to utilise the optical out, so now iv added a portable DAC and Amp the sound quality is better than i ever imagined. Better than a lot of the more expensive hi-fi's i have heard. Granted its not as portable as it used to be, but its not really a problem as it fits in my bag easily. I just have the headphones plugged into my amp and although i dont plug my headphones into the remote i juust clip it onto them and have full control of my player without having to go into my bag.

All in all, i now see my "portable" set up as the ultimate...(for me anyway).

Let's see.... what I love about the H120....
UMS File Storage
Rockbox
Optical in/out
LCD Remote *that came with the player*
Still working after 3 years and 2 owners
With battery decay, I still get better battery life than the iPod on my original battery
Nearly everything is user replaceable (with some tech. skills)
Superior audio quality
I can't even consider any of the newer players on the market as a secondary player... none even compare to the H120 in features or capacities and sizes that appeal to me (after three years, I think iRiver has done pretty well. What happened iRiver??)
Overall, the best mp3 player I have ever owned. And probably will be the only mp3 player I ever own, even if I do replace parts (battery is next, then possibly hard drive to upgrade and finally perhaps the screen if it fails)

No other player can brag these facts, it's a shame iRiver phased them out. They had iPod beat in features, price, and functionality.

The sound quality.
The fact that I can drop it a lot and it still works.
The finish.
ROCKBOX.
LCD remote.
Error messages that actually tell me what's gone wrong.
Pitch shifting.
Everything else!

Just got my 120 from fleabay today didn't come with anything cables or user manual, but it was under £50. Quick scout around and I have a new charger and USB cable and I'm up and running.

So far I love the drag and drop capability, and I've already played with OGG compression and it's way better than MP3. Sound quality through Beyerdynamic Dt231 headphones is great but through my Gale Monitor speaker's WOW!
I've even tried it in the car I have a standard 3.5mm jack input in the front of the stereo (why pay £100 for an iPOD adapter??) and sounds great in the car.

I'm a happy new owner........ time to start ripping CDs

After I bought the 120 I saw a 140 on fleabay with a knackered hard drive, bought it on a whim with the idea of upgrading to 60GB so watch this space.

Where to start...

Windows Explorer integration
standard USB cable (uses the same one as my gf's camera!)
extreme customizability (I have a 30GB in my iHP-120 and a modded Rockbox, and hope to have a higher-capacity battery someday)
Included case, microphone, and remote
Interface (I likey the buttons)
&c.

Being a sound engineer i love my h120 for its ability to record straight to wav. Used to have to do it to minidisk which is a pain in the ass when you're recording a 2 hour gig (let alone the real time transfer to the comp). Now it's just a usb transfer away

I did a proper (biased towards favoring ipod) comparison with 5.5g ipod + iriver won!

Okay, I wanted to get an Ipod so bad as to replace my old and rather unfashionable h140 which is not as sleek and 'now' so much so that I started on a quest to find all the cons on my h140. What I found - its chunky - thus lacks sleekness and style, it has no video capabilities or colour screen, the clickwheel on the ipod shits on the iriver's joystick, less capacity than the new 80gb ipod, etc etc etc, and lastly its crap (not an entirely justifiable con, but anyways helped me in the moment to try and convince myself 'i hate iriver'). Now, I tryed vmoda vibes with both devices. Ipod sounds damn good I thought when i first listened to the ipod thru the vibes. Then i listened to the iriver h140, turned the bass up a fraction and WOW (not the preset), this was even better, the sound had more depth, more atmosphere etc. So, i thought 'so what?' and attempted to recreate the sound thru the ipod by applying the inbuilt eq settings. All good until I came to the conclusion that the output of an ipod is NOT capable of handling bass. I tryed the extra bass setting on ipod, not much added bass tbh. Then I tryed the 'deep' setting. In doing so i found a more penetrating drone of a bass but accompanied by a heap of distortion - now this was a problem with the ipod, not earphones as when i tried the vibes with the h140 using rockbox at the ridiculous highest bass level (tryed Dead Prez's - 'hip hop'), there was no distortion whatsoever at the maximum volume (don't do this you will go deaf in the long term and get a serious headache in 2 mins like i did). Anyhow, the bass on the iriver is amazing, and not just for hiphop. Any genre whatsoever from classical to rock sounded amazing and you can hear echos in the background from the deep, rich bass the iriver and vibe combo provides. In my opinion, if you have vibes and an iriver, do not waste money on an ipod coz you will lose half the experience such a decent pair of earphones such as the vibe has to offer. If you absolutely hate bass and it gives you a headache, get an ipod, guarantees no headache, if you want the option of no bass on an iriver, just turn the bass down on rockbox or set eq to SRS or somethin and turn the volume down - Sorted! now go get on with some work. But if you want the OPTION of having deep, involving (headshaking if preferred) bass and atmosphere to bring your music to life, its all about getting a h140 ( plus you get amazing digital audio recording capabilities + fm tuner) So much as I hate to say it, screw apple, and as for iriver - get on the job of making a hdd player with
120+gb capacity, same great recording features of the h140, a video player, more media playback formats, bluetooth, wifi, 30+ hours battery life, more style than the 80gb ipod, less size than the 80gb ipod ( ie make a thin clix-design hdd player with proper touchscreen buttons and hold-to-scroll feature). Do this iriver and your fans will love you for it and buy 10 units each guaranteed!

The recording features that my H140 (soon to be an H160 ) and Rockbox provide. Absolutely stellar.

i got my first 120 about 2 and 1/2 years ago. i loved it from the beginning. i checked around and compared all the different players.......right off the bat, i was able to see that iriver is a stiff competitor with ipod. when i read all the 120 could do compared to the ipods, i was sold. i bought my player off amazon.

i set up my songs - loving the drag and drop ease of use, the charging without the usb port, and the whole shuffle feature.

guess what???? i dropped it 2 months ago on a hard tile floor. it had the leather case on it. i'm not sure what happened, but i could no longer power up the unit........i tried charging it and it would not charge either.......

so, i opened it up and looked inside. not knowing what i was looking at, i closed it back up........

i was going to get the h10 model out now.......but they were sold out on amazon and most other places........

i found that staples online had it for a good price, but just as i was about to buy, i found an old pc review on the 120 and i compared it with the pc review on the h10........i didn't want to lose my shuffle feature! so, since they are no longer being made, i decided i'd rather have a used 120 than a new h10.......so i bought a refurbished one off ebay.......will be getting it tomorrow. i am really excited. it's my favorite player.......it's flashy in all the right places.

p.s.: if anyone has any clues about reviving my first player, let me know! many thanks.

Until yesterday, my MP3 players were iRiver SlimX IMP-350's, with max capacity 650 MB! Now I have an iHP-120 loaded with 1.30 firmware. I'm going to flash it to the lastest iRiver firmware and then Rockbox.

I started researching MP3 players a couple of weeks ago and after a while the H1x0 players emerged from the fog as the clear winners. The deciding feature is the inline remote. My SlimX's have that and I'm quite aware of how convenient that is. Lately by far my highest usage is in the gym and the inline remote is perfect for that environment and usage. Hard to think on that MP3 players with inline remotes are no longer being manufactured (to my knowledge).

Yes, as I said my experience is with the SlimX and the iRiver firmware for that is extraordinary. It's head and shoulders above any other product I've had, and there's quite a few of those. What is obvious to me is that the people who developed (and continued to develop) the firmware were users and quite enthusiastic about the product. They were able to put themselves in the shoes of the users because they were the users! That's something that's missing from so many electronic products.
