New 40 GB Toshiba HD - MK4007GAL

I called Toshiba today and talked to someone in the parts department about the long awaited MK4007GAL 1.8" 40 GB Hard Drive with high-shock protection. The parts rep I spoke with said his inventory list showed that there are plenty of them available in Japan but as far as here in the U.S. they are marked as, "COMING SOON".

To refresh everyone's memory, Toshiba announced their availability back in August of 2005, but to everyone's dismay they have failed to become available for retail sale, or as I have discovered even as a replacement part directly from Toshiba USA. What makes this drive so attractive is that it is the same size as the 20 GB drive Toshiba made for the H120 but with double the storage capacity. It is also more energy efficient and is tested to withstand greater shock. So, who wouldn't want a drive that increases battery life and takes more abuse?!?!?

I making a general call for information from Mystic River's Asia community concerning the local availability of these drives. Perhaps some entrepreneur would be willing to buy some up locally and sell them here!

I would love to see the 40GB single platter. That way I could keep the slimline of my 120 with double the capacity. Let' s have some info from our Japanese members!!!

Actually the MK8007GAH is 8mm high and will only fit in the H140. The H120 requires a 5mm high drive, such as the MK4007GAL. The MK8007GAH is basically a dual platter version of the MK4007GAL.

This has probably been answered elsewhere, but I can't find it at the moment:
Will the MK4007GAL drive fit an iHP-100?

I currently have a MK1003GAL (10gb) so being able to fit a 40gb drive in would be wonderful!

Thanks,
Tom

The MK4007GAL is the same size/weight as the MK1003GAL so fit shouldn't be a problem:

MK1003GAL

Height 5.0mm
Width 54mm
Depth 78.5mm
51g

MK4007GAL

Height 5mm
Width 54mm
Depth 78.5mm
51g

Thanks for this. Amazing how they can quadruple the capacity and it still remain the same weight and size!

That's 90 GBP, not 190. Currently the conversion is $111 USD for us Yanks which is well worth the upgrade IMO. I am sure I can sell my 20gb drive on eBay to someone to cover at least half of the cost

Now I will have some room to put some of my favorite albums in FLAC format!

Or keep it and use it for a back up external hard disc.
