CRC error and reformatting the drive
Hi
I have a (refurbished) H120. At 1.75 gigs I get the cyclic redundancy check error. Scandisk didn't fix it. Some questions: 1. Will re-formatting the drive (maybe) fix it? 2. To reformat do I just choose "format" under properties on the drive in Win Explorer 3. Do I need to reinstall the fw (I am not sure where exactly the fw lives... on the hd or in its own memory) 3. If I need to, how do I reinstall the fw. Do I just drag the unzipped 1.66 hex file onto the drive in Win Explorer, or is there more to it than that. Thanks so much |

1. Maybe.
2. Yes. 3. No. 4. N/A |

Thanks Febs
It's under warranty... new...no drops. If it fixes with a reformat is it likely to stay fixed. I guess what I am asking is, from your experience, can this be an intermittent kind of problem that will crop up again, or does the hd just need to be cleaned properly with a reformat. Thanks again |

I suspect that if Scandisk didn't fix it, a format won't fix it either. However, you have little to lose by trying.

I left it to reformat overnight and it won't go past 7 bars... should it take that long. All songs appear to be still on the player. Grrr.. guess I should just send it back unless there is some other way to reformat... "quick format" from drive's context menu in Win Exp or perhaps through the player itself. Would either of these be a better way. Actually from your last post I am not sure why I am even doing this. It should probably just go back

This may be similar or the similar\same as the ScanDisk solution, but have you tried the Check Disk application through the command prompt? That application was able to isolate the bad sectors on my HDD and allow me to salvage music before I really started to do some surgery on my H340. So, here's what you need to do for the Check Disk (with fix operator).
1) Plug up the iRiver and identify the asigned drive letter 2) Click Start > Run > enter cmd 3) Type chkdsk /r (the /r is the operator that forces automated fixes) This WILL take a LONG LONG time depending on the number of disk errors and size of your drive, but it (hopefully) will salvage a lot of your music library so you can dive into the formatting. Good luck! |

bad 140
Hi there,
Wondered what the drastic surgery might be after running chkdsk /r which I'm doing now on my 'new' HP-140. I seem to have the same problems with clicking and cyclic redundancy checks. I'm doing the chkdsk now and hoping that if this really does fix bad clusters etc, that the unit may become useable as it is? I'm guessing that otherwise, I'll need to buy a replacement drive. The 60Gb sounds nice - as I'm wanting to use the unit mostly for location recording. Had a 120 running Rockbox so naturally I wanted bigger. Hey ho. |

I tried the Check Disc solution but kept getting " Chkdsk can't run because the volume is in use by another process....." This continues even after restarts. Any ideas?
If someone could provide me with some step-by-step directions on how to format the HD I would really appreciate it. Thanks - S

Quote:
1) download and install swissknife CompuApps, Inc. - Download Swissknife 2)open swissknife 3) Select your drive (mine is called "USB Host Adapter 1" ) 4) Click on where it says "Partition and quick format" 5)Click on delete and then "yes" 6)Make sure the files system is set to fat32 and then click create to format the drive. |

Does this clicking noise only happen when you try to format it or during regular use as well?
