Gapless firmware question?

If iRiver comes out in a couple of months and says that MP3 gapless will not be done, but only OGG gapless, would it be worth it re-ripping all of my music to OGG.

Is APS with LAME better then ~192 OGG?

Thanks

That depends on a few things.

1. How big your music collection is

2. If you share your music with others or play it in other DAP's

3. If you have the time

4. If you can live with the reduction in battery life.

Providing you have no real objections to any of the above then re-ripping is okay. Do not consider the transcode approch as a short cut since transcoding spells death to the playback quality.

I have no objections to ogg and gapples if iriver only supports that one codec. All of my rips are ogg Q8 anyway.....to others this may prove to be a BIG issue.

1) That's a personal decision

2) Only you can answer that. Any answer you get is very subjective. Many people like to test these things for themselves. I know I do. I never settle for what the crowd has to say. And furthermore, I don't even subscribe to the theory that APS is better than anything which I personally tweak. Most people IMO are just lazy and accept what the Hydrogen Audio 'gurus' have to say, without doing their own testing.

To that I say ....HA !

1. Around 1000

2. Don't really share it.

3. Time is always slim.

4. Hmm, maybe not.

I've kind of decided not to, I mean, they will do MP3 gapless eventually - or hopefully.

if they did make ony ogg gaples (for example) I'd simply just re-record the stuff I wanted in gapless format (live cds and stand-up mostly) I don't know yet if I really want non-gapless on my other stuff as I switch genres quite frequently. If the gapless isn't cross faded that I'd probgably leave it off anyway.

Still reckon it's a good idea and at least iriver might be starting to listen.

I have not done extensive benchmarks but in my listening experience OGG does not use significantly more power than MP3. Most of my music is in OGG format and I get 14-16 hours of play time. It is true that OGG requires more processing to decode, but depending on the hardware (anyone have spec's on the H-series?) it may have no difference in power consumption.

As for quality, OGG is superior to MP3, but converting from MP3 to OGG will not result in a noticable quality enanchement, because MP3 is a lossy format. Once you lose it, you cannot get it back.

Getting back to the main point, gapless had better be crossfaded otherwise it is would be turned off for me.
