Acrid smell coming from iHP-120

Has anyone ever experienced an acrid smell coming from their unit? I have noticed that if I have my iHP-120 on my desk when I am working that there is a slight, almost acidic, odour coming from the machine. If you take a good whiff close to the player, there doesn't appear to be any particular smell but there is defiantly an odour coming from it.

Does the battery give off any vapour when it is discharging? The odour is strong enough for me to still smell it up my nose several hours later.

Maybe I just have a sensative nose!

John

No, there is no smell with mine. Are you using it while plugged in? Perhaps you have a bad socket, the acrid smell sounds like insulation burning to me....battery shouldn't evolve any smells during charge or discharge.

No, the smell is there whenever the unit is operating. I usually re-charge with the unit turned off, so there isn't any smell then.

It is hard to describe what the smell is really like. I don't know if it is an acidic or alkaline 'pong' that I am picking up. I use my unit at work (I have one of those jobs that lets me listen to music when I want to) and it is a general smell around my desk (no smart comments please!!) whenever it is on.

If I don't use the player, no smell.
If it just sits there looking good, no smell.
If I use it, it leaves a very subtle odour.

It's a good way to know if someone has been using it whilst I have been away from my desk - must be some cunning Korean security device built into it to let owners know when players have been used without permission.

Let's hope it ain't a semi-con going home - that sounds a bit like a regulator or poss even the amp device 'burning'.

Big question...does the smell follow the player home or into the car? If so, then there is definitely something in the player..if not, there may be something else around your desk that is causing the smell that is generally being used at the same time as the player..such as a headphone amp (just an example).

In my experience resistors or caps smell if going south IC do not. Battery should not smell. If it goes away maybe an iriver employee left a bit of lunch inside during the manufacturing process. If it gets worse or if smoke starts coming out that would normally be a bad sign. Return to maker would be in order.
