Weird high pitch whine

So I'm holding my iHP 120 in my hand. It's not connected to anything. It's powered on and I'm scrolling around checking for a file. Perchance, I put my ear up to the headphone/line in-out end of the player and lo and behold, I hear a high pitched tone coming from the player. It's not audible through headphones or anything, but it seems that when the unit is on there is a high pitched tone being emmited from the "business end" of the unit. Anyone else encounter this? For the heck of it, I hooked up a pair of headphones and I still hear it (not through the phones), as well as when I've got phones & remote plugged in (again not through the headphones, just physically coming from the player). It's just a very high pitched tone in and around the top of the player when it is turned on....So I turned it off, put my ear up to it again and fire it up. Sure enough, I believe it is the sound of the hard drive spinning. Your thoughts? Do I have a defective unit?

Don't worry. Your unit is not defective. This is normal. And quite an old topic round here, dating back to the first forum I think...Wow..remembe r that one veterans ? It is indeed the HD spinning. What happens, is that even though the HD isn't spinning at top speed, the heads aren't parked, and so platters remain in a ready to be read state....When you select your song, the buffer will fill, and the platters will stop spinning, and the heads will park, (which you'll sort of feel and maybe hear if you don't have cans on) and the noise will go away. The HD in your PC does this too, but in a different way, and you're also used to it. I really don't mind ths as much as I used to, becasue it gives me a sense of security..knowing that the firmware is written in such a way that power is applied when it should be, and powers off when it needs to. This may be part of the problems that Karma users are experiencing....So I'm cool with it.
