Removing/replacing H1xx LCD screen

I stuffed up an already broken (but working with a bodge) mainboard last night, so I removed the LCD to sell on eBay, but as I was asked how to remove an H1xx LCD without damaging anything, here goes: (all the pictures are clickable for larger 3x size)

DISCLAIMER: You undertake any modification/repairs on your own, I will not be held responsible for your actions.

1. Strip the player down to just the mainboard with no battery attached:

(screen is on just to show it is working before removal, mainboard is broken beyond repair though)

2. Peel back the tape covering the LED backlight:

3. Very carefully wedge a craft knife inbetween the backlight strip and the mainboard and unsolder the two points marked (don't try and remove the backlight strip from the LCD), using the knife to gently lever the backlight strip away from the mainboard during the unsoldering:

4. Once the backlight has been unsoldered from the mainboard take a look at the back of the mainboard and you'll see 4 points, these are how the LCD holds in place on the mainboard, two points which just sit in and two clips:

5. Very carefully lever the LCD off the mainboard at the "point" corners, it may be a little difficult to lever off because of the tape round the LCD (don't remove it completely) but be gentle:

6. This is just to show the LCD still works after being lifted off the mainboard, the ribbon cable underneath is still connected:

7. Finally carefully lift back the LCD screen, pull back the brown holding flap of the connector socket as indicated, then carefully peel the ribbon cable off the mainboard (it's held down by a little double sided sticky tape) and out of the socket:

9. Et voila, one removed LCD screen, once you've successfully removed one you'll find replacing it is just as easy.

I'll be listing this LCD screen along with a H120 shell on eBay very soon.

Great Haku! Thanks for saving me and many others from the pain, stress and suffering of trying to do this without any guidance.

The only place I know where you can get a replacement screen is from another player, best bet is getting a dead unit off eBay.

word of thanks!

Haku,

I have just used your excellent guide and instructions to transplant my LCD from a player I bought with a broken screen. Even though I have never soldered before I found the pictures and instructions so clear that everything proceeded without a hitch!

Just thought I'd let you know how useful I've found this, perhaps the mods should move it to a more permanent location (faq's?)

Russ

I wonder if anyone can tell me what the difference between me using a razorblade to slice through the 2 solder points and properly unsoldering them would be?

I already have a soldering iron, so am I simply to apply the iron to the solder points until it goes through them, or am I missing something?

The solder will not cut that easily. You face the danger of damaging the board - especially if you slip with the blade and hit the board.

You need to use something like desolder braid to absorb the solder as you melt it.

The blade isn't used to cut the solder. It's used to pry the screen away from the main board while melting the solder with the soldering iron.

Use braid if you have it as it will be easier, quicker and leave the board free of solder so attaching the replacement screen is easeir.

I just levered the board away with the little knife whilst melting the solder. After melting and remelting the solder a few times the board came away enough, especially after a few bits of solder were taken away with the iron.

Using desoldering braid would be a much better solution as it would be lots tidier.

The advantage of the other way was that when it came to re-attaching the screen there was already enough solder that I didn't even have to apply any more! Just melt the bits that were still stuck onto the screen and the board.

I should have clarified in my initial post - the mainboard is beyond repair, and is therefore of no use to me ...

I'd just like to add my .02p

At Step 5, rather than lever the Screen from the board, I simply turned the board over and (very gently) pushed the plastic clips and points through. The screen came away from the board easily, and with much less risk of the LCD bending ---> breaking.

Kudos Haku. Much appreciated ...

Perhaps the webserver (where the pics were hosted) was removed or the files renamed.

I think I have copies saved somewhere - I will PM you if you still need the files.

Russ

Edit: After checking I have only saved a link to this page and not the actual pictures (typical). Apologies.

I have found the files - when zipped it's about 350kb which is too big to post here.

I have sent integrex130 a PM - if anyone else wants them please PM me.

i still need a screen 3 years on!, anybody???

My iHP140 still holds a good charge and is top sound quality i wonder if Iriver know just how highly rated this player is, even if it does need a respray and a new screen, it'll be well worth fixing for me.
