iHPTool endorsement

Just a quick note to say that I used iHPTool today (AFTER deleting the iRiver database file, as recommended here--thanks!) and had no problem with it for setting up the database--and it got rid of the glitches that the iRiver db setup had ("numerical" genres) plus the too-long-files issues (very frustrating).

Thanks for the recommendations here!

(iHPTool was not as helpful for playlist work, though--Winamp was great there, once I figured it out.)

So is the great big iHPTool warning on their page anything to worry about? I'm a bit scared to use it for now.

Was here as well. I just, as otherwise recommended here, deleted the iRiver db file and had no problems, including with the 15% of the files the iRiver db software had a problem with.

I'd like to add that I jsut tried ihptool tonight and it worked very well. I also deleted the database file before trying it. I am still on FW 1.17. I have a mix of OGG, MP3, and WMA files.

What people are failing to realise with the warning is this is no different from any software you install on your PC. It's just the warning has been made more prominent in this case.

Big D -- I guess it just goes to show that marketing and perception, at times, is half the picture . . . ;^}

What you fail to realize is that the user base is much smaller for this app then "any" software and there is no official word on how many people tried it vs. how many people had the problem. So, my reasons for not trying until last night are exactly what I said.

And when the next firmware upgrade comes out (next month?) we'll all be right back at the beginning, again. Helevitia, you go first next time!

An additional note: iHPTool is great for playlists (once you figure out how simple it is to use, that is!). Simply hook up the player to your computer, start iHPTool, click the "new" button and name the new playlist, and then drag folders or files over to the right-side pane. At that point, you can shuffle or sort. Easy as cake (and even easier than Winamp, although without its various options).

When I used it, it decided all my ID3 tags were wrong and I got a load of songs called ??? by ???. Seemed to work alright with ID3 V1 but nothing higher than that. No problems with the iriver software.

FWIW I used iHPtool quite a lot.
Never deleted the database, because iHPtool does that as part of its operation. The only point of risk I can see is if it is disturbed while creating the db (power cut? unplug the USB?)
I used it because the majority of my files are WMA, and its not affected the player at all.
Having said that, I gave up using the db completely when I got close to 10Gb of files because it was making the boot up seek time so long. Now I just use playlists, randomplay or choose albums.

I still use iHPtools for creating the playlists, as it handles WMA, which winamp doesn't (at least my version doesn't)

Yes, and that is the main reason why people wnat to use iHPtool w/ the ihp since it can tage OGG files properly and allow you to use the DB.

Question Working with iHP-140's

Hiya

I have only just stumbled across this here iHPTool thingy.

Can anyone tell me if it works with 140's? I notice on the website that it says that it works with 100's and 120's only.

Also can anyone explain to me the reasons behind deleting the db thingy? Also as it seems to be the done thing, how do I do it?

Thanks

(Will this then mean I will be able to use random by genre once its all set up?)

Thanks (again)

Michael

i have used iHPTool many times and have just tried it again today to fix my long filenames. never had a problem with this software. but i just cant really used the database cause the boot time takes a while, about 1:40 minutes for my 37gb. if db/scan is off, my boot time is only 12 seconds (upon pressing the play button). im happy with file/folder access and i play by album so no hassle for me without the database.
