Reading HD - How long is too long?

I am a little confuse?
Although this doesnt cause any problems with the machine and I have no problems with sound or playback, Anytime I turn my IHP-120 on (US model with 1.40 firmware, approximatly 8 gb left free) the red led stays lit (which says it's reading from the HD, eh Duh...) for approx 18-20 seconds.
Is this normal, is it too long, am I just looking for malfunctions here?
Any thoughts?

I think, that's not unusual.
My device takes about 15s to boot (6 GB free disk space).

The boot process takes even longer when you were playing a playlist the last time you used your device (depends on how big the playlist is), if you have the 'resume'-option switched on.

When the scanning is going on, the delay between boot-up and when the player is available to use, seems to never end.. then it's too long (indicating some problem).

It's a bit like watching a CD scan and TOC - it takes a little longer according to how many tracks there are, but excessively long scanning can indicate a disc fault or read issue.
