How to store music in Genres ?

I know it sounds a little stupid, but using a file tree (no DB) of e.g. Genre > Artist > Album > Tracks how do you store your music files in Genres ? I mean which Genres do you use ? I have a broad taste of music, but find it difficult to attach a genre to a certain kind of music. E.g. I have a lot of oldies, that you can call country, but also rock and roll, or just oldies. Other examples are two of my favourite artists/bands, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd. The first can be called Folk but also Rock and PF also Rock, but also Symphonic Rock. When you look in All Music Guide or Freedb it also differs a lot.
So just to get some ideas, how do you do it ?

The only real sollution to this has to be to use your own judgement. So many artists defy labeling so you simply have to make up your own mind.

Not as much as they'd laugh if I even just had any Eagles on my iHP!

I agree, I am a third of the way through putting all my CDs onto my lovely iHP and I know Im going to have to go back and sort it all out later as Im creating a monster! I have WAY too many bands listed as "Indie/Alternative", I've got Coldplay in with The Jam. And where on earth do I put The Beach Boys ? (no rude answers please!)

Don't worry too much about the genres while you are ripping. The tracks can be mass tagged at a later date. Won't take long.

Make sure the artist / album info is correct, as this is more of a pain to correct later.

I have the same problem. Does ne1 know of a website that references bands and their particular genres in detail? (i.e. not just rock, alternative rock, industrial metal etc).

When picking genres remember that it is YOU that needs to categorise bands together. You are the one who needs to be able to find the artist / album / track.

Also consider that you will often want to play the same genre together (hence the option to select by genre) so someone else's classification is often useless.

An example is my "Alternative" genre includes (among others) R.E.M, Eels, Radiohead, and Semisonic. This is because I often want to shuffle amongst these artists, though apart from Radiohead and Eels I probably wouldn't come close to describing many of them as Alternative.
