I've changed-Now I use the remote all the time! (with pics)

Hey everyone,

For the longest time, I, like many others, never used the remote because there were wires all over the place.

Well, I hacked my headphone cord from 6 feet to only 18 inches. Now I never leave the house without the remote!

I cut the remote adapter cord in half and soldered the male plug onto the shortened cord from my headphones. So now my Sony headphones will plug right into the remote without using the adapter. I soldered the female plug from the adapter cord onto the long section of cut off headphone cord, so if I want to use these headphones without the remote, I now have a long adapter cord.

This has been awesome for running and biking. I run and cycle with the iHP on a belt (using the phone clip mod) and it rests on my back just above my butt. Now, instead of reacing around to adjust volume or skip songs, the remote is clipped to the neck of my shirt. I just reach up and make whatever changes I want.

It's like I've got a whole new toy!

WARNING: It is a bit of a pain in the a$$. Headphone wires are typically coated with an insulator on each of the individual strands of wire. There's also very fine filiments of thread as the core of each channel. What I did was seperate the wires from the thread of each channel, cut the threads off with scissors, restraighten the wires, then use the soldering iron to melt off the insulator on the wires about 2mm long. Then I could tin the wires with solder. I did this to all wires before joining. Then I cut shrink wrap the appropriate lengths, placed them on all the wires and soldered them all together. It's very delicate work. Once connected I heated all the heat shrink and I was done.

before I started cutting cords in half I'd consider opening up the remote, desoldering the cord connection, cutting the cord to the desired length, move the strain relief, remake the connection to the remote.

Will take more time this way but will also look much less hacked......should you ever elect to sell the player having duct tape hiding your "cut" may cost you some $$ in resale.

i decided i was gonna try and use the remote, i just have twist tie around the excess cord...

only thing i have noticed is that with my ex71s...the cord is shortened, as you all know. the remote does weigh enough that if not clipped onto something, it tends to pull on the phones, and my ear...sometimes pulling them out. (the headphones, not my ear lol)

Go hunt for the extension cord that came with the EX71s...that is what I use and the remote doesn't pull on the cord...

This was too funny ...I got the visual of your dilemma and it would make a great add for iRiver and the power of the remote!

Um Gary...What are you going to do if you get another set of cans which require the remote adaptor ?

Also, you ever think about chopping the remote cord in half ? Ive thought about it SO many times...would love to shorten it.

If I get another set of cans, I'll retire the Sony's and hack away again. I'll be able to reuse the male remote end by desoldering. I'll only use one set of mobile headphones with the iHP. If I'm at home, I'll listen to my home system.

Never thought about chopping the remote cord. Since I wear the iHP on my back (on a belt), it's the perfect length (see last picture).

Relax, it's a solder connection. Used the world over for connecting electrical circuits together, including the highest end headphones.
