New Firmware 1.40 released
1.40 is released...looks to be the final for 1.20B but doesn't say if it fixes the shuffle problem. I don't have my player with me but will check it out later.....

According to folks over on the iriver forums, the shuffle bug still exists.
This is ridiculous. How can you ignore such a serious bug for so long. Well, I'm cancelling my order. I have lost all faith in iriver now. |

IT'S RANDOM!
I just checked it: SFL DA: Started in a folder with track 01 wrote down the tracks to follow: 4,7,9,8, shut down player. Start up player, go to track 1: Now the order is: 9,8,2,5,10. Every time I startup the player the list is different! Good job iRiver! Taken from the official boards, maybe there is hope. Can somebody else try it, I'm too lazy. |

Hi Adam,
Yes thanks for replying to my post on the iriver forums. I decided that the original poster probably hadnt tested it and was just going by the release notes. And thanks for replying here too. This is very good news. Would be interested to know if anyone has tested on a large number of files. Glad I waited a little bit before cancelling my order. |

I have checked on a 300 song playlist...as best as I can tell the patterns don't repeat...at least through the first 25 songs or so...looks to me like they fixed it...
BUT I will not tell them "Good Job", they are way too late with this fix

Very interesting, I'll try it out today (and try to study at the same time)
Anyone tried to see if they fixed any of the hard drive spin-up issues? - Odie

Oh, and am I the only one that finds it a little strange why they jumped so many version numbers? (1.17 -> 1.20b -> 1.40)
Maybe theres a lot of bug fixes? Or maybe they just wanted to match it to the ihp-140 launch - Odie

I just downloaded and upgraded my firmware. To tell you the truth the player sounds exactly the same as before the firmware upgrade.
iRiver didn't make the player sound one bit better and I'm pissed. I waited all this time for a upgrade and the player still sounds the same....what am I doing wrong....damit, I'm sending this back. It only holds 156hours of music encoded at q8 using ogg and if I don't screw with it too much it only plays about 11 hours before the battery craps out. Im really really really upset and Im really dissapointed...gonna send this back and get a ipod....not! I never did figure out how to make it shuffel in the first place so this upgrade don't mean jack to me anyway. I think Im gonna down load the Korean version and see if it sounds any better. They always get the better stuff anyhow since iRiver is a korean company. Maybe taking the firmware out is the better way to go as it will free up 1.5 MB of space. You think this is okay to do? sdz

Seadzz...you should try the shuffle out...especially on a playlist of your top songs...it is SWEET! Best way to listen to music, IMHO...
It also appears that the RESUME function was fixed, so it will pick up where you left off if you have checked "Resume" under the "General" Tab on the menu. Just hit play after the boot screen shows up...picks right up where it left off... I am really happy to no longer be a "grumpy old man" So back to finding some new canal phones....

Just two quick points:
1. They don't seem to have fixed the hd spin-up bugs 2. I've not checked this thoroughly yet, but I seem to be getting the same random shuffle still. - Odie

OK, I've just done some checking and I came up with the original shuffle list a couple times in a row but after playing around shifting folders and such I came up with following:
A: Actual Playlist: 134/1220/791/469/642/135/1388.... B: Shuffle List (1st): 134/168/471/1529/493/777/780/927... C: Shuffle List (2nd, after starting different playlist and then restarting the original playlist): 134/197/199/168/439/313/1043/1473 D: Shuffle List (3rd): 134/1220/791/469/542/135/1388 TURN OFF AND RESTART E:Shuffle List (1st): 134/1220/791/469/542 Same as when I turned off. so I turned off "Resume" and restarted again and got: F: Shuffle List (1st): SAME AS item B. TURN OFF SHUFFLE, START PLAYLIST NORMAL, STOP, RESTART PLAYLIST WITH SHUFFLE AND GET LIST C AGAIN. In between I did some more button pushing and got completely random sequence. There is still something funny about the sort, many times it is "random" but it definitely repeats exact sort sequences under common conditions, have no idea how I got the random sequences other than I definitely saw them...

Over on the iRiver forum there's a thread in which somebody talks about the buffer -- waiting for the buffer to fill before shuffling to the next (second) track. I've not had time to read all of that thread or try it out, tho. I had my player boxed up and ready to return this morning; it would have been sealed if I hadn't run out of tape. Good thing I got up early enough to check the iRiver site today. My biggest issues have been addressed. I'll be keeping the player and evaluate the new features. Next: on-the-fly playlists!! (I know, can't get no satisfaction!) Barry |

Since most of the major concerns have been answered it seems like many of you still aren't satisfied. But my main concern has been good tech support and even though there have been many problems with previous firmware I don't know why people aren't really excited about the new firmware. Yes it has flaws still but other companies like Apple don't listen to their customers like this and that along with the other cool features of the ihp-120 is why I bought mine.

That's correct. Resume does not work in DB mode.
I was giving iRiver the benefit of the doubt during the long time between firmware releases. No more. They really suck as programmers or they just don't understand the issues, meaning they are not paying attention to the customers. Unfortunate because satisfied customers would be the foundation to capture huge market share. I have no more hope for iRiver and I am truly hoping the folks doing the open source code save us all. Elgibby,
I'm afraid you appear to be correct. Seems I'll have to make some Winamp playlists after all. |

So you're shuffling by genre; cool. Have you tried to resume? I just went into the DB, clicked on rock/select all/select all, and pressed play. turned on shuffle. everything is fine. Then I powered off, powered on, pressed play, and the player resumed. But the NEXT and subsequent tracks were from the whole drive, not from the rock DB (I got country, reggae, etc). Not good. |
