A few quick questions
Hey everyone! I'm new here and I'm expecting to get my new iHP-120 on Monday if the UPS tracking number isn't lying to me. But in the meantime I just have a few quick questions about the iHP.
1) Is it true that the iHP can't play DRM WMA files? If so I should have gotten the Karma. I'm just curious because I plan to use services like at buymusic.com and walmart.com. 2) What in the devil is optical in/out? I'm kind of new to the MP3 player world. And if I have anymore questions, I think I know who I'll ask. Thanks in advance! |

1) im almost positive that NO mp3 players can play DRM WMA files. they only can be played on the computer that the CD was ripped from.
simple solution! burn the DRM WMA files to a audio CD, and then used you favorite CD extractor/ripper to rip the audio tracks back off. I personally use EAC+lame 1.91 to rip all my CDs. 2) optical in and out is exactly what it sounds like its optical inputs and outputs for you iriver. this feature is one of the main reasons that i bought my iriver. the standard jacks that are on all the other mp3 players are analog which means that the digtal media (your music files) have been converted to analog output via the ihp-120s onboard DAC. traditionally these portable DACs are of lower quality than you will find on a any hi-fi system (home theater reciever or stereo alike). therefore by using the optical outputs you transmit all the music data digitally and allow another source to convert it to analog.

It is likely that iRiver will soon add DRM WMA support to the firmware though. The only question is.... how soon is "soon" - Odie

Actually the Zen's and other Creative JB's have DRM support as well as the Karma (i think).
Maybe I should revise that second question: What's the difference between analog and optical output/input? |

duhh i didn't i explain it?
optical is mearly digital thus yielding higher quality when used in conjunction with a high quality DAC (digital to analog converter). analog out is the out produced using the irivers own DAC, thus if you hook up your iriver via analog you are losing some quality but its really negligible...i think i dunno. i just like having the idea that i can make my music lossless as possible...now if only i had FLAC support but there is only a slight difference in my ears between lossless and 256 vbr so i think i'll be ok, in normal use i would not even hear a difference so i guess MP3 is the more economical way to go....
