New Batteries; ipod alternatives?

Following on from my urgent help thread,

Only today have woken up to the truly appalling standard of iriver customer service. Rang the German number, got a short msg in German saying leave a msg, then a load of other twaddle in German that i couldn't understand

Going to try and buy a new battery for the time being as i can't emphasise enough how urgently I need my player working for a week's time, and iriver clearly will take months to fix it (if at all).

Have spent the last 5 hours on amazon, ebay, kelkoo, google etc and can find nowhere that seems to sell a new battery for the H140, despite what i read about how 'batteries are relatively easy to get hold of'. Before anyone grills me for posting an already answered question, I have scanned over this forum too with no luck

Sorry for being so persistent here. Hope someone can help.

Edit: have edited thread title in accordance with the post lower down the page.

If you're gonna change the battery you may as well buy a higher capacity one which'll give you loads more hours of musical enjoyment.
I bought an iPod battery which works fine in my H140, you just need to switch the wires over which is the least fiddly bit of a very fiddly job.
But it's worth it. You can buy these iPod batteries all over the place. They were on sale on eBay very cheaply recently.

Here's the thread on this:

Cheers man!

I have consequently discovered:

http://www.cheap-battery.co.uk/acata...w.kelkoo.co.uk

..Is the top option, the

Ipod - Battery Series 1 Replacement
Ipod Internal Battery
3.7 Volts 1200mAh
iPod series. Fits all older models (not for the new slim models).

..gona fit my iriver? And if not, which is the battery i should be thinkin of getting? Bear in mind i am UK based and need something deliverable within the week ideally, so abroad aint an option. And it's an H140 i'm fixing, just to reiterate.

Seeing as my iriver died from my using a charger with insufficient voltage as opposed to too much, so i am fairly sure it is just the battery that has gone, and not the CPU. Either way, I need it urgently for my holiday next week, so i'm prepared to take the risk of buyin a new battery and still having no joy.. I can always return it afterwards.

Sorry to keep going on about this! Feel like i've been cut off at the hip or something lol. Gonna grab some sleep.. If anyone could please confirm if that's the battery i should be getting, i'll place an order tonight and it should be here plenty of time before I go abroad!

Ta.

That'll fit, but you'll get less batt life out of it. Shoot for 1600 mah or above. Look on ebay for ipod gen 1 or gen 2 batteries, as those are the ones that fit.

That is not the top option at all dude. You can get one from
http://shop.ipodworld.co.uk/iPodWorl...20and%20Power/
which is where i bought mine. It's the Newer Tech iPod Battery Replacement for 1/2G. And i can confirm it fits, it works well, just be careful when taking out the harddrive and switching the wires over. A few folks have got lucky and bought them off eBay cheaply but of course there's a risk they aren't new, won't work etc. if you buy one there.

There are loads of posts on this subject. It used to be the most posted sticky thread i.e. the easiest one to find but it seems to have hidden itself.

Anyway you can do a search on 2100mAh battery or all posts by me as I've replaced my battery for a 2100 mAh one, made a USB recharging cable and am looking for a way to use the old battery as a backup battery.

Again I've seen lots of posts on the subject of recharging. Look in the FAQ. The main thing is making sure you have 5V and THE CORRECT POLARITY otherwise your iRiver will sound like a Zen brick. In other words it won't work anymore.
Good luck!

That's the one.
Make sure you've got your charger sorted though, so you don't go buggering up a new battery!

Have had a read of that.. Sorry to ask a potentially stupid question then, but what do i use to charge my new ipod battery, my old iriver charger? or do i need an apple charger?

Not wanting to be rude but that is a stupid question.

Everything you've asked so far is in the links I gave you. Including the one you said you read. You need a charger which is 5V with a polarity in which the centre pin is the + and the outer pin is the -. In other words the iRiver charger, except in your case it may be the charger which is faulty.

Sorry if this sounds rude but I get frustrated when people keep asking the same questions and don't listen to the replies or do research of their own.

Anyway, don't fret. It'll work if you do it carefully and follow the instructions properly.

Ok thanks, appreciated. Wasn't so hard really was it?

I appreciate from the seasoned iriver forum user's perspective, being asked the same old crap must prove tiring, so I apologise for that. I too am a regular user of many forums and it does jar when the same old crap pops up.

No need to patronise though man; I HAD read that I need a positive polarity 5V charger, and I am aware that this is what I already own. However I am not technically/electronically minded, and for people such as myself it sometimes helps to have it confirmed personally by those who know. Given I am about to tamper quite extensively with an extremely expensive piece of kit in a way i'd daresay most wouldn't, I just wanna be free of qualms before I begin.

Thanks again for all the help. I will keep you all posted as to the outcome.

I wasn't being patronising. I don't mind being asked the same questions by people who can't find the links as I have had to do that myself sometimes. And
I appreciate your concern over not wanting to damage your iRiver.

What does annoy me is when you're given answers and keep asking the same questions again through not taking personal responsability and simply expressing unconscious self-doubt. And there is no need to be sarcastic.

People here are freely offering their help. If you can't take some personal responsabilty and trust what people say you should just send the thing back to the manufacturer's and stop filling up forums.

Sorry if that comes across a bit strong. I'm actually pissed off about a million other things and am in a grumpy mood. I do stick by what I said though (although I'd probably say it less aggressively on a different day).

Evidently some form of communication breakdown here, there is no issue of my 'not trusting what other people say', simply a (frankly justifiable) paranoia around an area of expertise in which I am ill-skilled.

Believe it or not, I wasn't entirely sure if there remained an important cosmetic difference between a positive polarity 5V Apple charger and a positive polarity 5V Iriver charger; I don't think this is a crime.

May I suggest a slightly more considerate approach when addressing naivety rather than stamp on those who need a second vote of confidence. I'm not lecturing seasoned users on how to behave, but simply pointing out this situation has left me feeling somewhat shot down and wary to return.

I have done my best to be gracious and hugely appreciative from the word go as of the week I started posting here, as I appreciate the advice you have all given me.

edit: just seen your 2nd post. safe, etc. i will let you know how it goes.

What Cheetah has failed to mention, but is in the reading is this: The ipod battery will ONLY WORK if you switch the wires around on the battery. That is, you have to remove the wires from the little plug, and swap em into the different holes. Then it will work fine with the iriver charger which, as you noticed is a different polairty than the ipod chargers.

Cheetah: I swear to god if you don't stop double posting I'm gonna lose my mind. It sucks up so much unecessary space and the edit button works fine so use it.

Woah! Hey seems we're all getting a bit touchy here.
I did mention you have to swap the wires over actually.
It's only a forum not World war 3!

OK I'm trying the edit function now as you're right, double posting does use up unnecessary space.

It's pretty easy to rub people up the wrong way with how we phrase things innit? And strangely it's all due to good intentions (not cluttering up the forum & having a good working DAP). I was abrupt, then Grimey was sarcastic then Gorcorps got snappy then i got defensive... arghhhhhhhhh! It's like a farkin soap opera!

Anyway hope nobody's feeling too disturbed after all that. I'll try to do less stamping.

By the way Grimey, MindControl bought the wrong battery for his iRiver (1600 mAh) and so might sell you his for a good price.
